| I’m friends with an FCPS grad. She has said that Langley High School was known for their wild party scene in the 90s. I’m sure CRES is lovely, but I would dig for more current information on the whole pyramid, unless you’re only staying for a few years. |
Yes, and there are plenty of AAP kids who don't make the cut either. |
Um, what does Langley have to do with this thread? But since you brought it up, I'll address it - I went there in the 90s and there was no "wild party scene" - at least no more "wild" than any other high school in the area. It's an excellent school and always has been. |
Langley is routinely a top 5 high school in the state and entire DC metro area. https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/district-of-columbia/rankings/washington-dc-47900 The initial poster clearly is a troll has has some mental deficiencies. |

I had 2 children at CRES. When my older AAP DS was in 3rd and my younger DS was in K, I thought the school was the best thing since sliced bread. I would tell everyone how wonderful everything was about the school. When my younger DS didn't get into AAP in 2nd grade, I was ok with it because, while he was a strong student overall, math wasn't as effortless to him as it was for older DS. Well, when gen ed 3rd grade rolled around, I couldn't believe how dumbed down his experience was compared to his older brother's 3rd grade experience and how little was expected of him. I felt like he was being jipped of a decent education and felt bad everyday that year for him. I felt like a bad mom for putting him in that situation. He was capable of so much more, but the administration seems to think gen ed means remedial and doesn't care to address many parents' concerns. We ended up moving out of state that summer, but I must say this poor educational experience played a part in our decision to move. There's something seriously wrong with this school, or maybe it's FCPS, I'm not sure which one.
Completely agree. It also boggles my mind that you can't have a student in AAP if they're not strong in math - but if they struggle in English, it's apparently no problem! Makes no sense at all. There has to be a better way than this black or white, AAP or Gen Ed system. Too many kids overlap and are strong in some subjects but not in all. It shouldn't be one group or the other, period, end of story.
I had 2 DS’s in a similar school and had the exact same experience until 6th grade. The 6th grade team was amazing for everyone, but if you’ were in Gen Ed before that, you had to hope for one or two of the really strong teachers among ALL the grade 3, 4 and 5 teachers. The others’ standards were quite low.
+1000 |
In my brief time on DCUM VA public schools forum, I have learned that EVERYTHING is about Langley. |
Asian American here. My parents immigrated to the US in the early 80s. My parents moved here for a better life. I worked hard, got a full scholarship to a good college and went to an ivy grad school. DH was similar - poor Asian kid, studied hard, went to top college and grad school. We are your typical model minority Asian American family. Fast forward to 2019, you have the children of these model minority Asian Americans plus the Asian immigrants who moved here for a better life. These families tend to cluster in top school districts. They all look Asian but we are very different. We all value education. We live in McLean and our kids attend an AAP center where the AAP classes are majority Asian. Most of our white counterparts send their kids to private schools. Most Asians send their kids to public, even when we can easily afford private. |
| NP. Exactly. Isn’t Level 4 AAP supposed to be for “gifted” kids, not just kids who work hard. At least that’s what the fcps website states and what Maloney said during her Colvin Run presentation last year. Anyone go to that joke of a show? The level 4 teachers at Colvin Run are even called Gifted Education Specialists. You just proved true every critical parent’s view of Colvin Run. |
No need to be rude. OP is considering buying a house. That’s usually relatively permanent. I have information from an FCPS grad that I thought OP would like to know about. Isn’t CRES in the Langley pyramid? |
Well it is called advanced academics. I thought it was just that, not a gifted program. |
You clearly have never gone to any aap level 4 info sessions if you think this. |
I have 2 kids in AAP. I actually just attended the Churchill Road Back to School Night. They barely mentioned AAP, definitely did not go on about gifted education. |
Yes, it is. However, your secondhand information from the 90s has absolutely no basis in reality or relevance to the present day. Stop trolling. -DP |
But this thread isn’t about Churchill Road. |

How about.. stop blaming everyone else, turn off your phone and tv, put the wine down, go find your kids (who are probably glued to their video games or YouTube) and be a better parent?
If you are trolling on here pointing the finger you are not taking personal responsibility, which means your child probably doesn’t either. Mic drop.. ? |
