| We may be moving to this school district and was curious about Colvin Run -- for both GE and AAP. Thanks! |
| Great school! Very active PTO |
| The school is very good, but there are definitely issues with the AAP crowd looking down their noses at the GE students. I have a student in both AAP and GE and even my own AAP child tells me that her peers say snotty things about the GE kids. |
| Only go to Colvin Run if your child is already in aap level 4 because it’s not guaranteed he/she will get in even if your child is truly gifted. It is very political process to get into aap level 4. The principal and vice principal also hand pick certain kids. Gen ed kids just float along through the years and don’t learn much. All resources and attention go to aap level 4 kids. Current principle enjoys dividing the kids into the 2 groups and couldn’t care less about the gen ed kids. Gen ed kids are labeled as not as smart/capable as the aap kids and they unfortunately carry that with them. It’s sad. Hopefully, rumors are true and this principle is leaving soon. A lot of parents will rejoice if that happens! It’s time for him to move on. |
| I completely agree with the last two PPs. AAP has ruined this school (and so many others). It could be a great school if the kids weren't divided and segregated, but they are. Parents of AAP kids will deny there's a problem, but just ask any parents of Gen Ed kids and you'll get the full story. |
None of my three kids (one still at Colvin Run) are/were in AAP and we have not had any issues whatsoever. If a kid is going to be snotty about it, so be it (I'd rather my kids have better friends than that.) OP, we are very happy at Colvin Run. Great principal, great PTO. While my kids were not in AAP, they were pulled out for AAP level reading, and my middle child was moved up to 7th grade math. |
Consider me in agreement as well. I've had three children go through Colvin Run and these are very accurate posts. |
| Just from some observations going to various games and camps, I've noticed this school has a lot of programs that don't seem to be available at other schools. I've also been impressed at the writing, art, outdoor time, and service work displayed around the school. |
| I am a CRES parent and am honestly shocked at some of the stuff above. Is this one poster with an axe to grind? We LOVE the principal and everyone I know feels the same. That’s why I really think this has got to be a troll. The guy has a cult following. People are completely obsessed with him. I have never met one parent that just plain liked him, everyone is very emphatic about how amazing he is. He does so much for the school and also happens to have a very laid back, friendly personality, which is probably why he is so popular. |
| Another parent here. Also suspect a troll. My child is the polar opposite of AAP. Lots of educational needs. The principal has been nothing but supportive of her needs. |
+1 |

So because some people have had different experiences - several negative - they're labeled "trolls"? Honestly. Congratulations on your positive experiences with this school. You do realize that not everyone feels the same way, right?
Stop calling people trolls just because you can't fathom other viewpoints. |
People get called trolls when they make sweeping, negative comments that go well beyond sharing their personal experiences. Probably the usual anti-AAP crowd or the Arlington haters who can’t stand how much better the Langley pyramid is than APS. |

This is complete bullshit. Colvin Run has always been supportive of my non-AAP children, who have moved onto middle and high school fully prepared. |
I'm a Langley pyramid parent - and we've been very happy with Cooper and Langley. It is true, however, that Colvin Run is a very divisive atmosphere for many. It's not a "sweeping, negative comment" if it's considered true by many parents and kids. Our kids all went there and one was in AAP - the others in Gen Ed. Honestly, the difference in education between the two programs is negligible, in our experience. There's really no reason why they can't merge the two together, or just make AAP the standard curriculum. At any rate, consider me in agreement with those who don't like the segregation that goes on there (and at any center). It was MUCH better once the kids entered Cooper (they went there before it also became a center), and Langley was the best by far. You can try and shout down people whose experiences at CRES don't match yours, but it just makes you look foolish. Everyone'e entitled to describe their kids' experiences, whether you want to hear them or not. |
