America has a very hands off / don't tread on me attitude towards authority. It is a legacy of throwing off the shackles of England. This anti-authority anti-government attitude is why it seems strange to present your ID when buying a train ticket or mass transit subscription. I think it seems strange because it's not a routine expectation here. But we routinely hand over our passports to get on a plane, ostensibly for other reasons, but also to verify we are who we are. And when you live in other countries, it's normal to hand over a lot of information for, say, leasing a place to live (another thing people don't do here).

The fact that the Federal Government under Obama was able to deport twice as many people while still respecting due process rights, and the right to seek asylum, and without deporting people to secret prisons, accidentally deporting citizen children including those with major health needs, shooting people, abducting school children outside of their school, using tear gas repeatedly, bringing out elderly people without letting them put clothes on first, or stopping food and childcare funding for American citizens in need, is a sign that this has nothing to do with deporting illegal aliens.
