It's fascinating to see how many nondrinkers there are out there. A while back the Washington Post had an infographic that showed that the top 20% of drinkers consume like 80% of all alcohol, and that fully 50% of people either never drink or drink extremely rarely. It seemed unbelievable at first since everyone I know drinks regularly but I guess that's because we've self-selected ourselves into our groups based on our consumption habits.

I'm really interested to know, what do all you nondrinkers do when you socialize? I basically have zero frame of reference for social interactions that aren't at a bar or a party.


Sorry, I am fascinated by this. Can you describe what a drinking night looks like? You start at 5 pm and go to bed at midnight so you have a new drink every 45-60 minutes?


not the prior poster, but you just drink way higher concentrations not actual "drinks"


So in just a few hours you'd have put away 6-8 shots of something? Wow.

Because you can drink that in a short period of time at night after work when your tolerance builds. Think units of alcohol not actual drinks so high abv beers/wine/liquor

I enjoy being beautiful. I drank a little in college, but stopped when I started working and realized how bad it made me feel/look.

our bodies are pretty damn impressive - could drink 10+ and still go run 7 or 8 miles the next day at my worst.

Due to a health condition, I have really cut down. There are some months I have zero drinks. December had a lot of parties so think I had 6 total that month.

I've never drank. Like a sip here and there, but less than once a year, less than an ounce. And I'm super ugly. Sure wish being alcohol-free helped me like it helps you.

3 martinis?! Can you please detail the timeline and where you typically drink them? Do you drink them up in the dainty glass every time or sometimes in a rocks glass? At home or mostly at events and restaurants?

I just never acquired the taste. I don’t like it. Beer, wine, hard liquor.

Maybe 1 or 2 total drinks the whole year.

I’m happy with my Coke Zero or unsweetened ice tea

A very thin friend in her 60s wanted to share a single bottle of wine among ourselves and our spouses. I had to tell her that my husband and I drink a bottle ourselves three or four times a month. A bottle is 5 glasses, and 2.5 glasses consumed in 2.5 hours over a nice meal per person doesn’t seem like a lot to me (but we don’t drink at all during the week).

Too many. I spent the last three years in a really stressful professional situation and was drinking at least two glasses of wine a night, usually closer to 3-4. It's shameful. It wasn't until I started my new job in September that I realized how unprofessional that environment was and I don't really have the urge to drink after work anymore.

Currently doing dry January and haven't had a drink since NYE and I feel GREAT.

Yes the idea of having 20-30 drinks a week, as a PP reported, as a parent with minor children and in my case a job and hobbies, just sounds not possible. I might have approached that amount briefly in my 20s when I went out like 5 nights a week and my body could metabolize 4 drinks without causing a hangover the next day. Maybe a couple vacations pre-kids where I drank at that level, especially if at a resort where we were just relaxing most days. But as a 30 or 40 something with kids and a full time job? How? I also exercise daily and need 6 hours of sleep minimum to be functional -- there is simply not time to go drink at a bar with friends for hours in end more than a few times a year.

Perhaps they're drunks who can't stop drinking.

OP just wants to get a sense if their drinking is "normal."


Or perhaps I dont like how alcohol makes me feel later or the next day —even just one. I don’t find alcohol or caffeine to add benefit to my life. I may choose to have a drink or two a year and I don’t get excited about it.


No caffeine either? Are you a stay at home parent of older children or retired?

Why did you "have to tell her" how much you and your DH drink? Why couldn't you just share the bottle with her like she suggested? Be flexible sometimes. Especially when it's in your best interest health wise.
