Why?

Kinda late to the party eh? This happened in late August and was big news then.

It was suppressed from "mainstream media" for over a week. Wonder why?

DP. Just stop.It didn't become a nationwide story until September 5, when the horrific video was released. It was picked up by national media when the video went viral several days later.

Against the mayor's wishes who wanted it not released. She knew that people would be horrified by the lack of public safety measures on Charlotte's transit options and the leniency of its judges.

Then one by one the other people around walk away (in the direction of the attacker, if he is so dangerous why are they walking towards in the same direction) except for that one guy.

I have read he eventually stands up and over the victim in the aisle. At this point the victim has fallen to the floor. He says nothing, he does nothing, he doesn’t call out to anyone, he doesn’t say anything to her, he doesn’t call 912. He just looks at her. It takes another minute for another person (the man who eventually takes off his shirt to help) to come over.

This guy watched it all go down and just watched this woman bleed out. Did nothing, absolutely nothing. He saw it. He was right there the entire time. Plenty of footage to prove it. I am stunned.

I wish I was stunned, but this country is awful. People don't care about each other anymore, and that's clear across society.

I didn’t know that no one offered to help this poor young woman nor come to her aid at all!!?

My best guess is that probably other people were afraid that the murderer w/the pocketknife would turn on them if they intervened?

Someone DID intervene, when a homeless man was yelling threats at people on a subway car, in New York City. A Good Samaritan intervened to restrain the homeless, violent, mentally ill man, and protect all the innocent, traumatized victims on that train car.

NYC prosecuted the hero. Ruined his life. And they publicized it, too.

Think about the message NYC sent with their actions. Think about whose side the progressive jurisdictions are on (hint: it’s not the side of innocent passengers on public transpo).

The poor guy - a former United States marine who was honorably discharged, is STILL being sued by the father - a “father” , who refused to house his own violent son or get his son the mental help he so desperately, obviously, needed:

There's a huge difference between doing nothing- even after the assailant moved away- and keeping someone in a chokehold until they die.

I think I would have voted to acquit Penny, too, but that was an exceptional case that still demonstrated that people who intervene in those situations will be afforded broad leeway.

Without cases that demonstrate the extremes it might be hard to know where the line is. That Daniel Penny could do what he did and still be acquitted should give people a very high degree of confidence that it is safe to act in those situations in good faith.

And that was a nationally-reported news story right away.

And no, normal people are not “sort of numb” to these horrific acts of random violence.

It wasn't random. Using your transit system as an asylum isn't some act of God.

This should also be a charge of a hate crime given what video audio of what he said as he walked away.

Well it was probably his daughter but when I was a kid I was sitting in front of a girl that looked like him and she pulled out some scissors and cut some of my hair off and laughed. The teacher pulled her aside but nothing was done. I think it's partly jealousy though. Beautiful girl on a train and the guy wants to hurt her.

This isn't a public transit issue. It's absolutely an issue about how we don't have a way to deal with mental illness in a way that protects the public. It's so dismaying that his guy wasn't in an institution.

You don’t deserve it. Look what you did to Penny after he stood up to do the right thing.

He was dragged through the mud of your legal system which is designed to protect these monkeys.

Every last one of you deserves to bleed to death and die in horror like this girl.

He made a horrible mistake with grave mistakes. I don't think there was malicious intent, but I do think there strong reasons to think he should have understood the grave risks of his actions. Strong enough that the people had a right to adjudicate his guilt.

If you're not capable of understanding why that case reflects the very edge of acceptable and appropriate behavior, then I really don't want you intervening in public. You're far more likely to do harm than good. That's how we ended up with Kent State, and what we're risking now with the National Guard and ICE.

It is very difficult to have someone institutionalized, even if they are obviously mentally ill, because most states set a high legal threshold before involuntary treatment is allowed. Laws around how the legal system can treat the mentally ill are passed at the state level and can be changed by state legislatures. In the case of NC, it is a red state and its current state legislature is controlled by the GOP and is in a position to be able to change state laws around institutionalization if they wish.

The biggest barrier to institutionalizing people is the constitution.

People who are judging the bystanders are aholes. I’m sure none of them understood what was happening for some time. It was a bizarre incident and when someone is hurt, you don’t automatically assume they’ve been stabbed in the neck. And you don’t look up on the train and think “this is weird, maybe someone got stabbed in the neck.”

You might see blood, but have no idea where it’s coming from, is it even real? I’m sure it was very confusing.

PP here. I agree with all you said except about public transit in Charlotte. They don't have enough security there checking for tickets and keeping watch for a crisis or crime event of any sort. They know it and are making changes.

The White House literally went looking through all the murders in America for a suitably pretty white victim and any kind of federal angle so they could slap on another charge and have a press conference.

It’s so craven.

Did you see the video of what happened to this girl? Maybe its because I have a pretty neice about her age but it brought tears to my eyes. The way the poor girl knew there was nothing she could do and just put her face in her hands crying. And no one helped her. I’ve never voted Republican once in my life but anyone human should be appalled by this.

This guy had been arrested 14 times. He shouldn’t have been on the street.
