What the mom did was gross and illegal. I'd be bothered too. I hate free samples and open bar food because people are gross about it anyway.

Fwiw, when I was in college I had a roommate who had bulimia. She was obsessed with food and I learned on our first trip to a grocery store together that she would sample food from bins and grab candy bars and eat them while in the store. It was gross to see. She would dip her hand in the food bins and eat from her hand then move to the next bin. I doubt she paid for all the candy bars she ate but she would check out and put a wrapper on the belt and pay for one.  She complained that people chastised her all the time. People shopping would confront her and she would be horribly offended. Store employees would also confront her but they never accused her of stealing. I doubt she ever stopped.  [/quote]
