If they are direct hires then the USG more or less has to arrange to bring them home or the irony is that the USG will be leaving a bunch of its citizens, that they sent there, in foreign countries without legal status.

“The newly appointed deputy administrator for the agency, Pete Marocco, met with State Department leadership on Tuesday and instructed them to get every USAID employee out of their respective countries worldwide by Friday, according to two sources familiar with the matter. Marocco said that if the State Department did not, the staff would be evacuated by the U.S. military, the sources said.”

Oh for God's sake. The military? You get evacuated by the military when there's no other option. You can't just send troops and aircraft or ships to wherever you want because Shadow President Musk had a fit.

I mean some USAID staffers live on assignment with their families, and you’re supposed to pack up and leave by Friday?

Or is staff just being recalled for consultation and families left in place for now.

On Friday, February 7, 2025, at 11:59 pm (EST) all USAID direct hire personnel will be placed on administrative leave globally, with the exception of designated personnel responsible for mission-critical functions, core leadership and specially designated programs. Essential personnel expected to continue working will be informed by Agency leadership by Thursday, February 6, at 3:00pm (EST).

For USAID personnel currently posted outside the United States, the Agency, in coordination with missions and the Department of State, is currently preparing a plan, in accordance with all applicable requirements and laws, under which the Agency would arrange and pay for return travel to the United States within 30 days and provide for the termination of PSC and ISC contracts that are not determined to be essential. The Agency will consider case-by-case exceptions and return travel extensions based on personal or family hardship, mobility or safety concerns, or other reasons. For example, the Agency will consider exceptions based on the timing of dependents’ school term, personal or familial medical needs, pregnancy, and other reasons. Further guidance on how to request an exception will be forthcoming.

Wow. This is intentionally executed to create chaos. Everyone - stay vigilant, better times will come but USAID the way we knew is done. Sad times - US is ending its global supremacy.

It has only taken 3 weeks to completely dismantle an entire agency. So much expertise, international good will, and life saving work has been wiped away in less than a month. Other agencies will fall too, if this is not stopped. Congress needs to take significant action or they will become irrelevant. My heart goes out to the thousands of dedicated foreign aid workers and their families who are being displaced and facing an uncertain future. Thank you for your years of service.

Honestly if I were a US AID family posted in another country, I’d consider asking for asylum under the circumstances.
