If the question is happy students/alumni I think that's probably true. But universally loved? Nope. Lots of people hate Notre Dame, including plenty on this board.

There is no such thing. DCUM will inevitably find something to sh!t on every school.

Too woke, too cold, too red state, too big, too small, not STEMy enough, too STEMy, ugly campus, too remote, too urban, food sucks, dorms suck, not a “feeder”, too research-focused, not enough research done, too many Greeks, not fun enough,

This is why college rankings are folly. There is no one single mission of a university, and different people give different weight to those missions.

I think the academically good football schools get a lot of love - Michigan, Notre Dame. And this year Vanderbilt for beating Alabama. Also West Point and Annapolis are getting a lot of attention because they're having great seasons. College sports - particularly football - is what gets people caring about a school that they have no connection to. Outside of very rarefied circles, absolutely no one cares about Swarthmore or Yale and the like.

The people that count care about the academically elite schools

Amazing isn't it? You tell yourself that there aren't really people like this in the wild but then, here you go.

Michigan, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, West Point, and Annapolis are all academically elite schools. But they have so much more going on, which makes them more universally loved than Swarthmore and Yale. That was kind of the point of this thread, but maybe reading comprehension escapes you since your head is so far up your...

Well my kid finds it annoying and unnecessary on college tours.

There's a lot about the college application process that's annoying and unnecessary.

exactly. penn is not beloved by penn students. current students describe the culture as toxic grinders and wharton obsessed wannabes. my daughter (a legacy and humanities kid) spoke to many current penn students before decided (her dad went there too). she chose another well regarded school instead of penn because she was shook by her convos with current students. they talked about the competitive culture being very toxic to their mental health.

This person gets it.

Northwestern has great academics and Big10 Sports. Only know one alum but aside from location for some I’ve never heard anything bad such as too much of a grind or annoying alum.

My personal, completely unbiased, extremely scientific list of schools that seem to have inexplicably-happy-to-weirdly-enthusiastic students, parents, and alumni:

Syracuse
Notre Dame
Vandy
Tulane
Emory
Wash U
Auburn
MIT
Bowdoin
UTampa
Eckerd (before it as under water)

And in the past I would have said Northeastern but I feel like the bloom is a bit off that rose?
