Official Kamala Harris VP Thread

But I’m pretty sure Hilary would endorse ANYONE (even Kamala Harris) if it means she can prevent Michelle Obama from taking the title of first female President that Hilary feels the Obamas stole from her. After Barack stepped in front of her and “robbed” her of what she felt was rightfully her nomination in 2008, and after playing nice with the Obamas for eight years of his presidency to get the party’s nomination in 2016 only to lose in a spectacularly crash-and-burn shocker of an election to Donald Trump of all people…..the last thing she wants is for the party to decode that the only way they can win the presidency is to put up Michelle Obama.
So she and Bill immediately release an endorsement of Kamala.
They know she’s not likely to win, but they also know that the only way the DNC will replace Kamala Harris as the nominee is if they can identify a different black woman candidate who has the polling numbers to WIN! And Hilary knows that’s MO. We all know it. But there is no way Hilary is having that.

I think the Obamas and Clintons are shaping up to be the Hatfields and McCoys in the political back room chess game if the DNC.

Obamas can’t stand Biden (have always viewed him as a dolt and waking gaffe—but milked the best bro relationship image bc it served then all well). And now Bidens are seething about how Obama helped to push him out. Harris knows she’s toast without an endorsement. She isn’t popular and can’t win in polls.
Enter stage right: Bill and Hilary Clinton
They see this opportunity to regain some behind the scenes influence by working with Biden to endorse Harris. Then Harris knows she is beholden to them and not the Obamas.

It’s a low-risk gamble for Harris. Because she knows it’s now or never. If she loses, she loses. But this at least gives her a shot at it. And the Clintons are really good at the behind the scenes stuff. If Harris steps aside and someone else is the nominee, then she’s done in politics anyway. She’s going for broke.

Obamas won’t endorse her.

i don’t have anything resembling an obsession with the Obamas.
I have an interest in the polling numbers that show a hypothetical matchup between MO and DT that shows MO wiping the floor with DT. And in comparing that to polling numbers that show DT winning in a matchup against KH.
And a curiosity about why Hilary and Bill (but not Barack and Michelle) would immediately endorse Kamala as the party’s nominee when they have access to the same polling data than anyone else does.

I don’t think she will pick a governor she has shaken hands with once. It will be a white man with experience, but not so much experience that it makes her look bad. Someone probably from the East Coast who is well-known, vetted, and accepted by the East Coast media. And it will be a “team player” who never publicly called for Biden to step down.

She had a very good relationship with NC gov Roy Cooper from when they were both AGs. Gov Cooper is term limited so he won’t be leaving a state/seat Dems need. He would most like carry NC for Harris, he’s well liked. As AG 4 terms, gov 2. He’s NEVER lost an election. Plus he is experienced with MAGA shenanigans. The NCGOP stripped power from gov before he took office.

TLDR: middle age white moderate from a swing southern state. Hits all the key points.

She's not picking anyone. If.she remains on the ticket, she will go with who the party tells her too. The best choices are Kelly or Beshear.

Harris will be the nominee by August 5th. The Democratic National Convention starts on August 19th. She will make the choice but the process of selection will be condensed to about 1-2 weeks. Mark Kelly is solid but I believe Arizona would have a special election for his replacement and that would be a roll of the dice. I don’t think they would want to risk it. His vote is needed in the Senate.

I thought in Arizona the governor appoints a replacement. If so, Kelly makes a lot of sense. Otherwise, it seems like Cooper. I think he's too old, but he'd be fine. I also think he looks like an actor who would play the vice president in a TV show or movie.

Beshear has some ethics issues and nepo baby stuff that could be a distraction. Shapiro is way too pro-Israel. That would be a major problem in Michigan and with many young people and generally lead the conversation to an area where Democrats are deeply divided.

I love Jeffries but there’s no way he got his current position if he had aspirations beyond the House.

So happy that so many endorsements have rolled in so quickly for Kamala Harris!!

My personal favorite VP pick would be Pete Buttigieg. He's such an effective communicator, kind, intelligent, can speak to all parts of the country, strong faith.

My guess is that she'll either go with Shapiro (PA), Cooper (NC) or Kelly (AZ).

But I wish she'd pick Pete.

She’d be foolish to not pick Shapiro from PA.

I think picking someone from NC or AZ would be foolish because I find it a massive stretch to think those are winnable for Harris. She has polled even worse than Biden in AZ and Biden has been polling horribly there.

She needs to pick someone well liked from Pennsylvania or Michigan or Wisconsin. Those are must wins if Georgia and Arizona are going back to red this year. Which I believe they will.

She could pick Whitmer but I think that’s a bit risky. Shapiro would be a safer bet.

What clever politician would give up a current gig as senator or governor to be Kamala’s sidekick in a doomed campaign?

I don’t think she will win, but she increases her odds if she picks someone popular from a state that is a must-win. Like Shapiro.

You don’t give up your gig when you run for POTUS or VP. McCain and Kerry and Kaine all remained in the Senate. Ryan remained in the House. Palin was still Governor until she quit. Cooper is out of a job in January anyway.

FYI about Kelly - the Democratic governor would pick his successor for two years if he runs with her and they win.
