Is the future of higher ed in the South?

Anonymous
I skipped directly to the end of this thread. No point in reading it because I recognize the prompt(er). Every few weeks here with a "Go South" pump. Why? Why? Why? There are several really good schools down South. Nobody needs you to promote them at all. They'll do just fine without you

The only political spamming in this thread has been from folks on the left. Look at the previous page for a sample of their off topic politicsl slurs.

Are you disappointed that regular viewers are skipping past your carefully crafted commercials?

No interest whatsoever in looking at your previous pages. SMH

So it’s a slur to point out the state laws that these college age kids have to live under that are potentially life or death?

You’re pretty nonchalant about these issues.

"Even if I could’ve gotten into Harvard, I wouldn’t have gone.’" is actually the first line of the article.

You’re missing the point. It’s not sour grapes any longer. There are a lot of very bright kids who want nothing to do with the “elite” schools any longer. It’s not about academics, but cultural fit.

+1 The hostile reaction shows that some find this trend threatening for some weird reason. They can’t grasp cold, 80k LAC’s no longer being sought after.

The rich out of state kids who go to the Southern flagships can afford to fly out of state to take care of such things.

Please stop: most of us are concerned about emergency situations when women are turned away from ERs and forced to bleed out in parking lots

Good luck, southerners

Actually we’re not.

+2 IUDs for your daughters before college. Problem solved.

+1 It will also be 110 degrees on a regular basis in the south. It's not going to be the destination of choice of a lot of people.

These are tiresome. There are so many reasons kids choose schools. My DC was originally only interested in schools in the NE or in CA. Then, they realized they don't enjoy winter weather much anymore and started changing the criteria. Then, they realized that, although SoCal fits the bill for weather, they didn't want to be on the other side of the country. So, they traded in Boston and LA for towns in GA and FL. It has nothing to do with trends or making a statement. If my kid loved the cold, they would trade Athens for Burlington.

I honestly don't get the premise of the thread.

If true, I would expect way more people applying to say Alabama vs. Pitt...but in fact, that is not the case.

I guess the applications have grown, but when you actually look at certain Northern schools, their applications have grown almost the same. Pitt went from 31,000 in 2019 to 58,000, while Tenn went from 29,000 to 57,000. I don't get how Tenn is "hot", but Pitt is not.

I think the real moral of the story is that top 150 schools are "hot"...probably to the expense of all others.

Friend got pregnant with a late in life 'oops' baby while having an IUD. OB told her it happens.

+1,000

My sons hate the intense heat and humidity. VA now has the climate of what NC had 15 years ago. VA is the farthest south they'll go.

I mean--VA/DC does not even have cold winters anymore or even snow. NJ is very much like here, etc.

+1. As a Southerner, I hate these threads. I love the South, but it's also a real place. It's not some 2D culture war mascot either for the people who think it's backwards or the people who think it's all happy beautiful people who don't protest. The South is full of ugly people and people with left wing politics and people who are unhappy. The weather can be great or it can suck. Just let it be a normal place that people might or might not want to live without it signifying anything or scoring points for either side.

Normal kids aren’t looking for violence on their college campuses. Plain and simple.

I do agree with this, but I can't see either of my girls going south. Maybe Florida.

Where do you think that is?

Florida is special. It’s hard to be a nasty person when you have sunny skies and gorgeous beaches most of the time. That’s why we’re moving there.

Somehow DeSantis manages to be plenty nasty. And he has interfered directly in education. No thanks. I’d never send my kid to Florida for an education. And I say that as a native of the South.

have you heard anything out of Desantis' mouth? or the Orange fatty for that matter? both reside in FL and both are hateful, nasty people.

I went to school down south but will not my kids go to any school where abortion is not legal. I’m sure I’ll pay much more because of that and I’m ok with that.
