The hell you can’t.

Controlling an adult - not a good way to go.

Like you trying to control the mother.

How am I trying to do that? I’m just pointing out it’s a bad idea.

No, you aren’t pointing it out as a bad idea. You did, however dramatize it as controlling.

She literally said “how can I keep my kid from getting a tattoo”. That is literally the definition of controlling.

I think the word literally has control over you.
The definition of controlling is not “she literally said how can I keep my kid from getting a tattoo.”

Still waiting to hear how OP trying to stop her 18 year old from doing something is NOT controlling.

OP here. I'm not trying to stop him, I'm trying to have him put it off for a few years. Big difference.

Stopping him from doing something now is still controlling.

No it isn’t. He is walking around freely.

Placement can be terrible but so many people have tattoos it's really not going to be a big deal to anyone (other than you!).

You could try offering carrots or sticks for not getting one. Incentives are powerful! Or can be.

It's a big deal because tattoos are actually somewhat addictive. When you start young in an environment like that, you end up with many tattoos. Not one.

Ehhh - some people do some don't. But even if so, OP is just saying she wants him to wait, not to not do it at all.

Also what's the big deal if he gets a bunch of tattoos (eventually) instead of just one?

I don't have ANY tattoos but that's because when I was a kid my parents told me you couldn't be buried in a Jewish cemetery if you had tattoos. I don't know why I cared about that - I probably won't be buried in a Jewish cemetery anyway! - but for some reason it stuck. Maybe try that one with your kid, OP.

Now my mom is talking about getting a tattoo in her 80s. Good for her if she does.

She must be going senile.

Simple. You do something stupid = we don't pay for the next term. No spending allowance either. End of subject.

All parents should have some control over college age kid.
Someone needs to take control of you because you are dumb as a box of rocks.

All you are really doing is asking your adult kid to lie to you and hide things from you.

I got a tattoo at 19 and my parents didn't find out for a good decade. Control tactics do not work. Period.

Control tactics sure as hell worked on me. I knew there were consequences and didn’t want to abuse that.
You were a bad egg and a liar.

You are naïve and a sheep. Try growing a personality.

You’re the sheep for getting the tattoo. Try growing your own personality instead of trying to follow the cool crowd.

The cool kids don't get tattoos. The losers do. They're the ones who hang out around the smoking lounge in HS.

PP, what decade are you posting from? High schools haven't had smoking lounges in 35+ yrs.

Wrong.

What high school has smoking lounges with losers and cool kids? You sound stupid.

To you I sound stupid, but you are stupid. No one said there are smoking lounges now. There were some fewer than +35 years ago. Gain some reading comprehension.

DP Literally no HS have smoking lounges. Smoking isnt even legal for 99% of HS kids. You must be ancient.

Another stupid one. Read the second line if you can count.
I’ll rewrite for you since you are an idiot.
-No one said there are smoking lounges now.-

You said the only people who get tattoos are losers who hang around the smoking lounges... If these dont exist anymore, it would sound like no one is getting tattoos anymore, ever?

dp. It literally does not say there are smoking lounges in high school.

Your back tracking doesnt even make sense. If these dont exist, why did you bring them up? The only thing it added to the conversation was your (extremely old) age.

I got all excited when my college freshman told me he was going to get a tattoo and I was giving him ideas and suggestions.

He wanted me to be shocked. Mission accomplished. No tattoo. I assume it will happen eventually but I'd like his brain to be a little more developed.

If you think that most good college students involved in sports are going to drop out in defiance of their parent to pursue getting a tattoo, you are an abysmal moron.

You would be the type to drop out just to have that butterfly ink on you wrist.

If smoking lounges dont exist in HS, how is this relevant? I am very confused, as to why pp (you?) said this and are now saying that isnt what you said? Your gaslighting isn't very effective when it's written down in text.

Bizarre trolling from old dementia biddies?

Youre right, they'll get it in secret and mom will be none the wiser!

Unless she conducts body checks on her adult college son... in which case we have a whole new can of worms
