People are having a surprising amount of difficulty distinguishing between (1) an individual person choosing to wear a specific sweatshirt, and (2) an official school event where people are supposed to wear specific sweatshirts.

It’s not an official school event! It’s organized by the senior class, not the school administration. And no one has to participate.

It's organized by the senior class? Like, a bunch of seniors said, "Hey, let's do this on May 1!"? Or is it an SGA event?

"Organized" is too strong of a word. As a PP said, May 1 is NATIONAL college decision day. Seniors across the country have been marking this day by wearing their college's gear for decades, including in MCPS. In past years, this didn't even need to be communicated because the kids just knew from the previous year's seniors.

OP: goes to a competitive school full of strivers because it is a "good" school

School: is full of strivers

The OP said, "Dumb place sent out a notification for kids to wear their college sweatshirt to school on May 1st." which sure sounds official.

The school is promoting a student-organized initiative.

This. My husband wears a Harvard robe to get the mail in the morning. He dropped out of college (that wasn't Harvard by a long shot).

HHH HS West, class of '89. Don't remember doing anything like this on Long Island.

Well if OP is referring to Whitman, which I suspect she is, there was nothing sent out by the school. Whoever runs the senior class Instagram page posted it on the class page.
Either way, it doesn’t matter. It’s NATIONAL college decision day and kids all over the country have been doing this for decades. Problem is that OPs child grew up thinking everyone should get a trophy and is upset now that she doesn’t have the one she wants.

Graduated from MCPS 30 years ago, not from a W school, and it was a thing then. Pretty sure these things are organized by the senior class as others have said.

I hate this!!
DS hasn’t committed yet because school he wants to go to, we can’t afford. And he knows that where he ends up will be considered “below average” by classmates. Why are people so anti UMD?

Lots of schools do this. At ours lots of MC gear. Nothing wrong w MC. Counseling wanted to celebrate students planning their next phase.

NO ONE is anti UMD. It's a tough school to get into

That's absurd.

Agree. I don’t think people are anti UMD. It’s the kids’ perceptions that should be going somewhere “better”. My DC knows kids turning down T10 schools for UMD because of cost issues.
