Who are all these people making over $150k a year?

Anonymous
WB/IMF couple in early 40s. Neither of us is even in the managerial grades yet and our total income is about 500k (when converted to the gross equivalent, as our pay is net). And we feel quite poor relative to many of the families in our DC’s private school. 200+ individual income really does not seem that extraordinary in this area.

Registered nurse here. I work for federal government as a staff nurse in a specialty area and make $110K, I only have bachelor degree. Regular staff nurses don't make more than $100K anywhere really. I consider myself lucky to even make this much.

My mother is a RN and works crazy overtime.

She made $190k last year

Right but that's overtime, if she worked on her 36 hours per week it would be about 100k right?

Did OP restrict the question at 36 hours?

Also most people work a standard 40, not 36 hours.

Most high paid professions work well over 40 hours per week.

Correct. I'm a nurse who lives in DC and I make $125K and consider myself well paid compared to just about every other nurse I know (here in DC and elsewhere). I have a master's degree.
Most bachelor's prepared nurses in DC make $80-90K unless they are working overtime.

PP commented that they were a RN for the feds and make $110k with only a bachelors so surely others make more with a master’s than $125k even without overtime.

I feel like all of these positions are for contract/term, ie expiring after a few years. How do people get in there with perm offers?

Most are foreign nationals with politically connected families.

It took me until my early 30 to break 100k, I'm 56. Two of my kids graduated within the last 4 years with a CS started out making about $105k and had several large raises since. They are now making about $135k so I expect them to break $150k within a few years, well before they're 30

In lcol areas and small markets they could be making a fraction of the salary for the exact same job just because of their zip code. There are regular cops in California who make 200k plus a year. School librarians on Long Island who are making 150k a year. Move their job to Alabama or Mississippi and see how their salaries are slashed.

But this is.. [checks notes].. DC Urban Moms... I think it's safe to assume the large majority of posters are in the DC Metro area and that is the context of the question.

I think this board is now filled with non-local posters. I'm one of them. This board draws UMC people because it has so much feedback on issues which apply to that socioeconomic class of people. Been coming here off and on for over a decade. Google has brought me here when I search stuff about...fertility treatments, nannies, earning and managing a high income, private school, cosmetic procedures, etc.

The assumption in a thread like this should still be that you are DC metro, and if otherwise, it's incumbent on you to say otherwise.

Do you lobby for the dark side?

Banking titles, 2-3 years at each level. You are routinely identified as such, 1st year analyst, 2nd year analyst etc.
Analyst, hired straight from undergrad. Normally promoted to Associate after 2 years, 3rd year analysts are rare and basically remedial.
Associate, either promoted from analyst or hired straight from an MBA, 2-3 years at this level
VP
MD
These are generally Wall St banks. European banks usually have Executive Directors/Directors between VP and MD.
If you join a Wall st bank fresh out of undergrad you can easily make VP by your late 20s. Making MD by 30 is on the early side but not unheard of. Lateral hires at all levels are rare.

What do you do that you do nothing all day to have 4 jobs and get paid?

I do same exact jobs at multiple companies. I have synergies. It is kinda let’s say you are Head of HR and each year have review insurance companies and benefits, keep up on new HR laws keep up new payroll laws, do mgt decks. If you were head of hr two different places there is overlap, kinda like that.
