Since we are on an anonymous forum I’ll tell you what I really think about all those “people in medicine” living in your house. In my 20 year career in healthcare, I’ve discovered most practitioners are quite dumb. Incompetent at critical thinking. Really only skilled at memorizing, which was once incredibly helpful and is now mostly replaced by technology. There are very few true experts moving the ball forward in any area of practice but many self-aggrandizing frontline practitioners who couldn’t tell a well-designed study from a WebMD article. They are completely unable to grasp basic details of the validity of research like population size, confounding factors, P-hacking, etc. My only solace as a patient is that I can circumvent them when I need to with my privilege and ability to pay out of pocket. But I feel terrible for everyone else out there, seeing these hacks and getting truly horrible care and advice.

Hopefully OP can find someone actually competent. But it will be hard.

{sigh} There is a big difference in the nutrient content and satiety level of healthy but calories dense foods such as peanut butter and avocado versus junk food like Cheetos and salt and vinegar chips. Op did come back to say she doesn't have any junk in the house (however did say in her op that she has to have snacks around for her athlete kids, so maybe she backpedaled, maybe she didn't).

If op's daughter goes low fat and low carb and deprives herself she will be hungry all the time, hangry, and possibly malnourished depending on her choices. If she can eat a balanced diet with (gasp) healthy fats and protein and (double gasp) complex carbohydrates, then she will be fueling her body with healthy foods, providing her cells with the nutrients they need, providing her brain with the fat that it needs as she is still growing and developing! She's not a 45 year old pre menopausal woman who has to eat celery and laughing cow cheese.

Op--I think your dd will be fine if she gets the unconditional love from you, you cook healthy well-balanced meals, and you don't deprive her for fear that she doesn't look like she's healthy. I would insist that she moves her body with intention multiple times a week-not for weight, but for mental and physical health.

There are many diets between low carb/low fat and cherries with Mountain Dew.

I know it’s hard for “healthy skinny” people to admit that a 5’2” person can eat a healthy diet but still gain weight because they need to believe they are skinny because they are so amazing at being healthy.

The reality is a 16 yo girl has a sh!t ton more new hormones and body changes than a menopausal woman. To go from travel sport to no sports is a shock to the body, happens to injured athletes all.the.time.

Avocados and peanut butter are not healthy choices for everyone.

There are tons of things that contribute to weight gain like Cortisol (stress), the pill, depression, lack of sleep, mood swing.

I’d check those things before I’d go OMG! Diet!

Everybody needs to exercise, has nothing to do with weight.

It’s required just like homework.

Protein shakes
Full fat yogurt bowls
Pasta with butter and meat sauce
Chicken, like 1/2 a chicken
Potatoes, loaded
Caesar salad, or a chef salad with ranch
Jambalaya sausage
Steak
Egg sandwich with bacon and cheese
Apples with peanut butter
Grilled cheese sandwiches or quesadillas
Bagels with cream cheese
Burritos with rice/cheese/meat/beans


these are meals not snacks

Yes. Whatever it takes in order for the individual to avoid the unnecessary adverse health effects that are certain to follow. And if you don't think that obese people suffer psychologically, then you should do a bit of research.

Some of us--like the OP-care about the physical health and mental well being of a teenager who is obese unnecessarily.
