Nephew looooves Northwestern. So happy to see him thrive after a difficult high school experience.

Yale - happy
Brown - mixed bag.
Swarthmore - mixed bag but happier than Brown guy.
Vanderbilt - mostly not happy
Georgetown - decidedly unhappy
Deep Springs - deliriously happy

Yup. Guessing these are DC kids? Never heard of Deep Springs but same feedback on others.

I know a few kids there now who don’t love Davidson. Too small and isolated.

Also kinda snobby / pretentious. They do have kids who transfer out, just like nearly every other school.

head) Chicago, Tufts, Yale, Middlebury, UMD, and Wash U and many more colleges. Is all perfect - no; do they have complaints time to time- yes; but generally all are having happy and productive college experiences.

Tell me more about Brandeis and Haverford, planning to look at both, what do your kids like/not like

Brandeis and Haverford seem so different to me. Surprised someone is looking at both. Can you explain the attraction, pp?

Davidson College is amazing -- DS absolutely loves it. The location, just outside of Charlotte, is a huge plus and provides so many wonderful internship and volunteer opportunities.

Glad to hear, looking into this for DC.

If you’re not happy at Vanderbilt or Georgetown that’s what my grammy would call a “you problem”

Georgetown has rats.

Serious rats. To the point that it impacts daily life.

I think I’m the PP, yes to intelligent and Jewish, less so super liberal (DS is more middle of the road although he’s used to being around super liberal). We’ve visited both now and both seem like great schools but not sure if either is the perfect fit. Very impressed with Brandeis academics, the campus itself is kind of lacking, and not sure if DS will find his people, we may visit again. Haverford is lovely, but maybe just too small.

Daughter loves Brown—she is outgoing, academic oriented and plays a sport. All boxes are checked.

agree on Brown based on DC friend group feedback - group also very positive feedback on Cornell, Vanderbilt, and Michigan, where specific comments were that the populations were extremely smart yet “normal” kids who were fun to be around. interestingly feedback was opposite for Yale from 2 in friend group, who said just a weird vibe on campus from kids who are all trying to one-up each other in every aspect of life. I think the personalities of student populations can actually shift quite quickly based on admission leadership priorities - Yale could be a case in point, but obviously this is anecdotal and based on a sample of 2!

If your son is not very liberal, he might be uncomfortable at super politically correct Haverford College.

More kids will say they are happy when they major in easy stuff and cruising

Our Georgetown Freshman really is loving the experience. Great classes, a fun cohort of friends and some great clubs and activities. They have not expressed any angst about food, rats or facilities at any point so far.
