And he forgets that Disney has studios that can produce top quality documentaries and advertisements. It won’t be long before Disney tells it’s side of the story to all of Florida. This action by DeSantis seems to be a knee jerk action and not well thought out. In five years he will be largely forgotten in politics. |
Oh, I think in five years he may be president

DeSantis and his GOP cronies are just trying to normalize authoritarianism so when they bring it to the entire country it won't seem so radical.
Just as a reminder, the government in a functioning Constitutional democracy is not allowed to punish corporations for their exercise of free speech. And there are 2 types of free speech that Disney is being punished for - the LGTBQ content of their products AND their campaign contributions, which the Supreme Court has held are Constitutionally protected free speech. This is what fascists do - they punish corporations which do not support "the state." Is this what you want for our country, Republicans? |

This is political theater by the politicians.
What's going to happen now that the bill has been passed, in both houses and is heading to DeSantis to sign is that Disney's legion of lawyers and their giant bankroll will now file for an injunction to stay the dissolution of RCID while they file for the law to be overturned. They will then file that the law passed is a violation of their first amendment rights of free speech and from government infringing on their right to free speech. The SCOTUS has already ruled that corporations retain the rights of entities and so the corporation has the right to free speech without infringement from the government. DeSantis has said that this was retaliation for Disney's comments about the recent DSG law. And his words will come back to bite him in court. In addition, there is a Florida statue that says that special districts like RCID cannot be dissolved without a majority of the residents or landowners of the district. In this case the residents and landowners are a group of about 100 residents who own property in the two cities within the RCID, Lake Buena Vista and Bay Lake. These communities elect local officials and a board of supervisors to coordinate with the Disney corporation to maintain the RCID. This statue will also be called into court for the injunction. More details about the Florida statute: https://wdwnt.com/2022/04/dissolution-of-reedy-creek-improvement-district-must-be-approved-by-majority-of-residents-according-to-florida-statute/ There is no way that the state will be able to enforce the new law for years to come. It's all political theater. |
Is this a serious question? Of course this is what they want for our country. It's never been about free speech. It's about them wanting to say whatever they want without repercussions. It's never been about the free market. It's about favoring companies that align with their narrow parochial interests. It's never been about the Constitution. It's about the 2nd Amendment and then their partisan interpretation of the rest of it. It's never been about freedom. It's about them imposing their cultural values on the rest of us. |
Indeed |
And quietly simmering below the surface is homophobic rhetoric that will be just become....normalized. The motivation behind ALL OF THIS will just quietly get lost in the political theater of free speech, and the very kids these a-holes claims to want to protect will suffer. |
| Apparently all of the bond debt assumed by the county will be on bonds in technical default once they are no longer backed by the improvement district and will be immediately due. That should be fun for tax payers |

What Dems and liberals don't get (and I am a liberal) is that it's a smart move.
Theater is politics you all realize that right? You really think Presidents have the power? It's all about leverage. Power is relative and power is all about drama and theater. What someone can get away with, what someone can get public opinion to focus on, what someone can do to position themselves in a good situation. That is power and that is also what the court of public opinion will hold. He's GOP - he is in FL. What do you think these people are like there? He's a lot of things but not dumb
Meanwhile, the Dems are trying to get the mask mandate reapplied to travel. It's done now. The Dems need to move on and be smarter than going back to try to do unpopular things. Sorry, whether masking is right or wrong, that isn't what is going to ultimately give them the power to do greater things in the long run. They too this COVID thing way too far left while the GOP took it far right. Things seem to be good now in that you do you on this subject. In terms of Disney, I agree it's all theater and by him moving forward with this decree is very different than making it a reality. However, what he has done is enough to satisfy his agenda. Check the boxes - it's really about that for any politician. |
Who issued these bonds and for what? Disney? |
So my husband is in the Pentagon on 9/11. He travels by car pool to work normally. No cars can get out. He is forced to leave and walks 5 miles to the school where I teach. He has to come to my classroom to get the car keys. So I guess when the kids ask who he is I just say he's my brother, right? Or I am directing the school musical and my husband would like to see it so I just introduce him as my cousin, right? Or the phone rings and my husband just had a heart attack and I need to leave to go to the hospital. When I call for assistance I should guard my words so the kids don't hear me say why I have to leave the building. I'm sure in any number of instances I will make a mistake and could be sued under the law. One day I am late because my husband has to travel and my son's daycare does not open early enough. So I lie and tell the kids that I had a flat tire. Because lying is better than letting them know that I had sex and have a son. Signed, a teacher who has seen these and a myriad of other situations |

De Santis is getting all the publicity that comes from going up against the big, bad Disney without actually harming the big, bad Disney (and the local economy). It's a win for him and no real harm to Disney. |
| I really enjoy seeing DeSantis lay his big hammer down on Mickey. Time to make a man out of that mouse and teach him how to keep his feelings stuffed inside. |
Reedy Creek Improvement District is essentially a municipality. Most municipalities purchase bonds as one way to finance their expenses. |
