You need to spend some time outside of the dmv. Or meet some people outside of the dmv. Or better yet, outside of America. This area has gone so far in one direction with covid hysteria that it cannot even fathom how to turn itself around. Really sad. You should start a support group with anxious teacher and crazy ventilation lady. |
I work in APS. Masks have largely been a joke in schools. This isn't going to change anything. |
I plan to continue sending my kids in masks for now… but you do realize that the CDC is now recommending relaxing masking? I’m not saying that’s a wise decision, but is the CDC “anti-maskers”? |
In my non-APS job I'm used to proceeding in a reasonable manner in the absence of guidance. I don't need to wait to be told what to do. So, if you want to opt out, send your principal an email clearly stating you're opting your kid out. No word on masking/not masking changing quarantine, procced with current guidance. No word about kids moving classrooms? Assume they're staying put. Honestly, it seems a logistical nightmare to try and move kids around based on masking/unmasking. FWIW my kids will continue masking. We have an under 5 at home with asthma. Personally I would hope other kids have to wear masks if they're covid positive, but clearly I'm not the policy maker here. |
Fairfax just released this:
Based on these new metrics and CDC guidance, FCPS will now adjust our roll back plan and allow everyone - staff and parents/guardians of FCPS students - to make a choice whether or not they will wear a mask starting Tuesday, March |
I hope more information comes out today from them. I'd like to hear policies for indoor sports attendance. |
We will have our kids mask for a few more weeks until community spread drops a bit more. The guidance will need to be broad reaching - sports and other indoor attendance like theater productions, what the impact on quarantines will be if a child is a close contact with a Covid positive person and one or both of them aren't masked. How to handle situations where parents or teachers are uncomfortable with unmasked kids (see the entire thread about teachers who may not want to come right up to the desk of a child who is unmasked. That's a public health measure, not a discrimination measure).
It's not as easy as "ok, opt out is an option for everyone including teachers". The entire safety framework is built on masking as one of the primary means of safety. |
Yes, those anti-maskers in CDC. Everyone is plotting against you. It is so unfair. |
Same with us, and honestly part of the reason is we have a trip planned for spring break and masking for a few more weeks is worth being able to take that trip! |

If kids are vaccinated they are not quarantining. Period. It’s really no different than before. |
We are still masking for the foreseeable future.
I tried talking to my kid this morning about treating everyone with the same kindness at school whether they were wearing a mask or not and he was legitimately offended, saying that people who were not wearing masks were failing to take care of the people in the community who had lower immunity levels or at risk people at home, and I said we would have to continue the conversation this evening (because, though I didn't say it, he wasn't really wrong and I don't know a great response to this argument). |
Similar. We’re struggling with language that won’t add to any conflict/confusion at school. If you come up with something, would love to hear it. Ours is in 1st. |
I am immune compromised and we have been very strict and careful. However, we make sure our kids know that at this point in the pandemic it is not up to other people to protect me. I can wear a KN95, I can get vaccinated and boosted. I can eat healthy, exercise and do all the other things I always have to boost my immune system. We are at a point in the pandemic where the severity of Covid is not the same as 2 years ago, particularly when we have the tools now to protect ourselves. |
Sounds like his parents are nuts and have brainwashed him with propoganda. The CDC no longer recommends masking, and the science is incredibly weak on masking to begin with (with the only RCT showing masks don't work). So sad these families are not following the science, only some new religion. We're so happy to be mask-free! |
