Woodson Feeder Schools

Anonymous
We are planning a move to the Frost/Woodson school district and would love some feedback on the elementary schools. Does anyone have experience with Canterbury Woods or Wakefield Forest? Or any of the other feeder elementary schools? Thanks so much.

We are at Mantua. It has it's flaws, but we like it.

Only part of CW feeds to F/W. WF seems to be well liked.

Be careful with Wakefield Forest and boundaries. There is an ongoing boundary study that includes Wakefield Forest and the portion that feeds into Annandale High School.

It is true that some students at WFES go to Poe and Annandale. However, Wakefield Forest is not within the scope of the boundary study, so I don't think there will be any changes to the WFES boundaries.

There may be changes to the middle school/high school boundaries for students that are within Wakefield Forest's boundaries.

OP here again. Does anyone know what potential scenarios there are for Wakefield Forest under this boundary study? I tried reading it online, it was a little confusing. Is there any proposal under which those students in the Frost/Woodson portion of Wakefield Forest would no longer be attending those schools? There did not seem to be, but I am not sure. Thanks.

From what I've read, Annandale HS is projected to be way over-enrolled, like 114% in just a few years. I think Woodson is slightly under-enrolled, as is Falls Church HS. (our current HS.) Any boundary changes there are unlikely to send kids from Woodson boundary to Annandale. I believe some Annandale kids will end up going to Falls Church HS and some to Woodson.

This is a good website for Fairfax county boundary questions:

From what I have heard, there are a series of scenarios that are still being bantered about and no one knows for sure yet. It should be much clearer this summer.

I think that's accurate. The only complicating factor is that Frost is over-enrolled. Otherwise, it would be a no-brainer to make schools like WFES feed only into Frost/Woodson.

I would consider the neighborhood of Rutherford which is walking distance to Frost Woodson. The bus rides are really like an animal house and giving the kids a chance to walk is great for them after a long day indoors. That would be Little Run Elementary which is small and nurturing.

One of the current School Board members suggested a while back that Mantua ought to be reassigned to Falls Church HS, but that suggestion does not seem to be going anywhere.

Annandale HS is actually projected to be 26% over capacity by 2014-15. Woodson is supposed to be 11% undercapacity at the same time. Falls Church is right at 100%. I can't imagine them moving Mantua to Falls Church from Woodson. It would make no sense to move a huge number of students from an under capacity school to an at capacity school. Also, would Mantua kids then go to Jackson MS? Because Jackson is also projected to be 22% over capacity. If anything, it would make more sense to move WF or CW kids to Woodson. The problem, really, is Frost, at 12% over capacity.

FCPS capacity projections vary widely from year to year. Anyway, Wakefield Forest kids won't get moved to Woodson. There's no way FCPS is going to drive up much further the percentage of lower-income students at Annandale, which is precisely what sending WF kids to Woodson would do.

Exactly. And certainly not with this School Board.

Yep, in published Q&A, they have already nixed sending WF kids to Woodson using Frost as an excuse, even though it is technically one of the boundary considerations. Too much socio-econ impact on AHS, especially their scores and extra-curricular participation.
