Woodson Feeder Schools

Anonymous
I haven't seen proposals yet, but my guess is that FCPS will end up sending some Annandale students to some combination of Edison, Lee and Lake Braddock. Edison is being renovated, Lee is under-enrolled, and Lake Braddock will have more capacity when some of the middle-school students are sent off to the new South County Middle School.

I think there are people at Wakefield Forest who want to get redistricted to Frost/Woodson and get an immediate boost to their home values, but it's not in the county's interest to take those kids out of Poe/Annandale.

If that is the case, then the same could be said for [u]anyone living in the annandale hs district, not just the wakefield people. It is an issue of a neighborhood community split in half after elementary school. And, it is an issue of woodson is a much better school. Who doen't want there kid to have the opportunities woodson offers. Saying that the wakefield peole need to stay in annandale is only because there are lots of white kids (actually wakefield is quite diverse) there and it would make annandale a totally minority school. thats all this is - numbers to keep diversity - gerrymandering for numbers.

Asserting that keeping Wakefield Forest at Annandale would be "gerrymandering for numbers" simply states the obvious - namely, that school boundaries reflect choices and that one factor that is typically considered is the impact of a boundary change on a school's economic and demographic profile. Compared to many other school districts, the current Annandale district is relatively compact, even though it's obviously also very crowded. That would remain the case even if FCPS decides to keep the Wakefield Forest students at Annandale and send other Annandale kids to, say, Lake Braddock, Edison or Lee.

I went to Wakefield Forest and I loved it!! Of course that was in 1970s. LOL. But seriously, it's still a good school. Mrs Moke, 5th grade teacher is awesome! I think she is still there.

wakefield forest still is a great school. It is Poe and Annandale that are not so great in comparison to Frost and Woodson. I have heard from wakefield parents that poe was such a let down after wakefield.

OP here again - does anyone have experience with Little Run or Olde Creek? Thanks

I have a friend that has kids at Olde Creek and they are very pleased. The class sizes might be a little large, but I think that may be a common issue in FCPS.

My kids will be going to Olde Creek in a few years. All our neighbors love it, tell me that it is a small school with a warm atmosphere and an energetic young principal.

At least one of the boundary options should please Wakefield Forest parents, as kids will go to Lake Braddock instead of Frost or Poe and Woodson or Annandale.

Why would that please Wakefield Forest parents? We are zoned for WFES-Frost-Woodson, and I'd much rather keep it that way. Option 1, which would affect the fewest students, or Option 2, which would bring WFES-Poe-Annandale students to WFES-Frost-Woodson, would be preferable to me personally. I'm hoping they take the path of least resistance.

Because the neighborhoods next to Wakefield Forest already attend Lake Braddock, and it would remove the split feeder that so many parents complained about. I think it's a great solution.

What neighborhoods next to Wakefield Forest attend Lake Braddock? Where I live (within easy walking distance of WFES), the neighborhoods to the immediate north, west, and south attend Woodson, and the neighborhoods to the immediate east attend Annandale. The closest areas that attend Lake Braddock are across Braddock Road.

I agree that the split feeder situation is not optimal, which is why I think Option 2 would be a decent choice, though it would exacerbate the crowding at Frost. All in all, though, I would favor Option 1, which addresses the major priorities of the boundary study (setting boundaries for Lacey Elementary, reducing overcrowding at Annandale High) with the least amount of disruption.

Well, the problem is that Woodson is considered a stronger school than Lake Braddock and many people bought homes specifically to get into Frost/Woodson.

I agree that split feeders should be addressed. When you add up the numbers, there is not much difference between the numbers in options 2 and 3.
