FCPS is turning the new high school purchased to fix crowding into an Aviation magnet school instead of a high school??

I live in Chantilly and did not receive any information about the open house. If you would be willing to share that information, that would be great.

If you didn't get the information, then you are not impacted by this.

Love the gatekeeping.

I'm not looking at every detail of your high school.

Robyn Lady was still talking last night about KAA serving as a Loudoun-type academy where students come from their base schools every other day to take certain courses.

The argument was this would reduce overcrowding while kids are out of their base schools, but avoid the higher costs associated with treating KAA as a shell with much of the current interior replaced with standard classrooms. She seems convinced that the current interior is nothing like a standard high school.

Will be interesting to see how other people react after the tour tomorrow.
This is what happens when your part of the County really has no representation on the SB. The "Oak Hill" area has a lot of people in it, but it's split three ways, out at the edge of all three. All three SB members get elected by and represent their core areas. It's how the split feeders happened, it's how Coates got hung out to dry, etc.

I'm a high school teacher for FCPS and live less than 10 minutes away from the school. So, yes, I am interested in seeing and learning more about the school, but thank you for your concern.

you should’ve gotten an email with registration info then. Langley Madison Oakton, Chantilly Westfield Centerville pyramids and maybe more all got emails.

South Lakes pyramid got it as well.

There are split feeders all over the county, including in areas where the School Board isn’t suddenly dropping $175-200 million on a new school, completely disrupting the CIP in the process.

Coates isn’t the first overcrowded school where action got delayed because the SB members wanted to fold it into a bigger review. Just ask Glasgow, which is in the middle of the Mason District.

DP, but it would be nice if people who want to go to the open house just because they are nosy or don’t want their taxes going to anything that doesn’t benefit them personally would just stay away from the open house. If you’ve never been to the school, parking is challenging when there are a lot of people there. It’s going to be a zoo tomorrow.

It's going to be a ton of retired old people from Forestville there doing everything they can to complain about the school. They'd do anything to prevent it from opening to protect their property value from any chance of a future redistrict to Herndon. Just look around and see how many people there are way past the age of having kids in the school system. Those of us with kids will get in and out quickly because we have soccer/football/baseball/lacrosse/whatever games to get them to on Saturday.

Our neighborhood is Floris-Carson-Westfield so seems like we're low-hanging fruit for the new school. Our kids are current 11th and 9th graders so the younger one will have the option to switch but I doubt they'll force us to split them up. But I wonder if there are limits on parents playing the "keep siblings together" card - or could, say, a family with kids in 10th, 8th, 6th keep them all at the 10th grader's current HS for the next 6 years?

They’re going to have to amend their own policy to even let current ninth graders stay where they are instead of switching. Even if they do that, I really doubt they’re going to let siblings who haven’t even started high school yet do anything other than go to the new school.

The SB will do whatever they please. I remember when people had siblings split between Westfield and Oakton. Try going to after school activities at both...

Why would you need to register for something literally called an "open house".

Man. I really had higher hopes for her. What a dud.

I'd like to give her the benefit of the doubt, but cannot come up with a rationale.

She was initially thrilled with the purchase of KAA because of the overcrowding at Chantilly (where she was Director of Student Services). She raved about how much this school was needed to relieve overcrowding.

However, after one of the BRAC meetings, she met with the Great Falls people.
Immediately after that, she changed her tune dramatically and began to talk about how it just would not work for a traditional high school--and that it would be a shame to get rid of those "beautiful small spaces" in the school.

Hmmm. What is the difference?
Chantilly students are mostly from Sully District (SB member Dixit).
There are also some Springfield students, I think-though that may have changed with the last district adjustment.

Westfield students in the KAA area come from Sully (Dixit, some of Floris); Hunter Mill (Meren, some of Floris and all of Fox Mill and a small portion of Crossfield.) Most of Crossfield is Sully.

Who are Robyn Lady's constituents? The only ones near KAA are Coates. Who else are her constituents? Herndon and Great Falls.

Wonder why she changed her tune so dramatically....

Puzzling to watch the meeting last night and that the leadership does not have a better handle on this school. The process started in the winter.

What has Reid been doing?

How in the world would it work to think that a specialized school would relieve overcrowding.
