FCPS is turning the new high school purchased to fix crowding into an Aviation magnet school instead of a high school??

I think all the FCPS high schools built in the late 1960s had planetariums installed in the school.

Remember, the 1960s was the dawn of the space race. Everything was about exploring outer space, so of course it was logical to add planetariums to our newly built high schools.

A planetarium would not have been a frivolous expense in the 1960s. It would have been as essential to a strong high school science program as a chemistry lab.

Also, the planetariums are not a huge expense. They are basically a mini auditorium with a high curved ceiling and projector. The renovated ones got updated reclining padded theater seats when they replaced the 50 year old seats, some fresh paint and new projectors.

It is not like they are showing laser light shows with top of the line sound systems.

That being said, I don't think FCPS should install one at the new high school. It is not the 1960s, and we have better uses for our money.

I don't think anyone is suggesting they have one. This is how rumors get started. Just like the one about the huge expense to configure the school from that woman in Great Falls.

The thread is about the space, aviation and/or ai themed academy magnet at KAA. That's why the planetarium topic came up. The new academy might require specialized construction above and beyond conversion to a 9-12 AP comprehensive high school.

Annandale, McLean, and Lewis need to be brought somewhat up to par with other high schools before we start talking about budgeting additional funds for specialized facilities for an academy program at KAA.

I know Michelle Reid wants something fancy on her resume before she goes, but can we just pause for a second and acknowledge that taking care of the basics, whether it comes to academics or facilities, needs to come first.

This thread began after a SB member mentioned that as a possibility. We are long, long past that discussion. About a hundred pages past.

It's odd that they are sharing boundary maps before they've decided what type of program will be offered at KAA.

Robyn Lady was still talking last night about KAA serving as a Loudoun-type academy where students come from their base schools every other day to take certain courses.

The argument was this would reduce overcrowding while kids are out of their base schools, but avoid the higher costs associated with treating KAA as a shell with much of the current interior replaced with standard classrooms. She seems convinced that the current interior is nothing like a standard high school.

Will be interesting to see how other people react after the tour tomorrow.

Why is it odd? People needs to see how the new school would alleviate the overcrowding before deciding the programming.

Remember that Robyn Lady represents the Dranesville District, which includes Great Falls. Some Great Falls residents are strongly opposed to a traditional high school for the KAA.

Other board members appear to favor a traditional high school with a specialized program. Even Reid has shifted her stance and now recommends a traditional high school with a specialized program.

Is there any information about when the Western High School open house is? Like what time? I don't see anything anywhere other than in the board meeting presentation.

You’re supposed to register for the open house

No, people don't needs to see boundary maps before deciding the programming. Depending on the programming there wouldn't even be boundary maps, as Dr. Reid said last night.

Other new schools have opened with some limited work remaining to be done, but this school will be under renovation from day one. Maybe they name it "Unfinished HS."

I'm a high school teacher for FCPS and live less than 10 minutes away from the school. So, yes, I am interested in seeing and learning more about the school, but thank you for your concern.

DP, but it would be nice if people who want to go to the open house just because they are nosy or don’t want their taxes going to anything that doesn’t benefit them personally would just stay away from the open house. If you’ve never been to the school, parking is challenging when there are a lot of people there. It’s going to be a zoo tomorrow.
