Has anyone decided to give up on DCPS and move to Virginia?

Anonymous
When I first moved to DC, couples would move to Virginia or Maryland as soon as they had children. It's great that more and more people are deciding to move to or stay in DC. But, I am wondering if Virginia is still a better option. I would be lost in Virginia, but I am wondering if it is better for my children. Has anyone compared DCPS and Northern Virginia schools? Any thoughts?

DCPS parent here. No comparison. Fairfax County schools are some of the best in the country.

Are Arlington County schools at the same level as Fairfax County? Are there any schools in DC that are at the same level as the Fairfax County school? I really don't want to move out of DC!

FFX schools are taking a bath with this round of budget cuts. I think you're better off in Arlington or Falls Church City. But, yeah, any of the three is laughably better than DCPS, especially if you hold aside JKLMO-Deal.

Yes, to over-generalize terribly, Arlington schools are at least as good as Fairfax schools.

We're planning to move to Arlington, although that wasn't our plan until recently. It's not *that* far away from DC and the more I read about DCPS/charter issues/hassles on this board the more I am put off!

We can't ever see ourselves moving out of DC (will eat noodles for private if we have to...lol), but if we were forced to at gunpoint, only place I'd consider in VA is Arlington.

Unless your child makes a mistake that lands him or her in the FFX discipline system:

No way, no how would l send my child to school in Fairfax County.

Unless you REALLY wanted to move to VA, I would not move because of negativity or complaints on this forum. The energy of Northern VA is TOTLLY different than DC! I think there are many more happy DCPS/charter parents than disgruntled parents (and not to say there reasons are valid) posting on this site!! I would just say apply early, and apply to many in and out of bounds schools, and you should be just fine in DC! A lot of these parents have their heart and soul tied to one school, and if they dont get in, they are ready to battle the world...you do need to exercise a little flexible--dont rush into such a major decision, and I'm sure I don't have to tell you that!

Holy shit. Those people deserve to be sued into poverty and destitution.

Fairfax is dull and overcrowded. So is MoCo.
DCPS and Charters have it going on in comparison these days...

I'm going to send my preschooler to DCPS beginning this fall. I had originally planned on spending a couple of years in DC and then moving to MD or VA for the schools (and the difference in cost of housing). However, now that I read more on DCUM and I try to keep up with DCPS news etc, I'm personally of the mind that no rash decisions need to be made, and we may be able to stay longer, maybe even forever. I feel that it's a good idea to get as involved as possible, and keep a close eye on your kid's progress and comfort level in his or her current school. My optimistic side thinks that DCPS and charters have the ability to offer just as great of an educational opportunity as any other school system, but I plan to keep a close watch and have a plan B ready to go if needed later on.

The momentum seems to be shifting more and more toward families staying in town. We just went through the whole charter lottery process, and are thrilled with the exciting options that are available now. For one thing, many of the charters are really taking advantage of all the amazing educational resources the city has to offer.
