I know ECNL is going to allow seniors in high school eligible to play even if they were hold backs. I was told that directly from ECNL commissioner.

No idea on how they used to do it.

While it does make sense let hold backs play down with of age players. It only makes sense senior year of high school after all the non cheaters have been recruited.

I dont understand why this matters though because these players need to play on a team for several years. If youre a hold back the only way to do this is to play on an older team. Which is something these platers/parents wont do. They want to be 16 year old freshman playing against players 1-2 years younger.

I was told it would only affect the senior season.

GY for players Senior year in HS makes sense. It adds a little incentive for recruiters to look at older teams.

But, this doesnt change the fact that these players will be raw because they haven't been playing on a team or maybe only high school soccer. Again hold backs dont want to play against players their age.
They'll search out whatever league or school allows them to play down for wins.

They are, but in other places I've already seen the whole my kid wasn't ready for school as an APRIL b-day and they really want them to play with their "classmates".

A 16 year old freshman in high school is a cheater. You know it and so do I. The problem is some sports have lost the narrative allowing GY. Once one parent cheats by playing down for wins others will do the same. I like how the private school parents like to call it regrading or reclassing to make the practice sound less demeaning.

Are you saying they turn 16 before they start Freshman year? How is that possible unless they repeat a grade - correct? you have to go to school by the time you are six. you don't have to go at 5, but you have to go at 6.

Are there really 16 year old freshmen? I guess April/May kids turn 16 at the end of the year?

Yes, see how it works?

16 year old freshman = 20 year old senior

Happens all the time in Lacrosse at private schools.

There will be no holding back for sports advantage. I'm guessing all of the fear from folks on here is coming from kids in other leagues.

There was someone pushing for GY earlier in this thread. Many people dont understand what GY really means and why parents are pushing for it.

In California, as long as they turn 19 after June 15 they’re good to go. They graduate at or close to 20.

Welcome to the world of holding back your kid for sports greatness.

Yes, different states have rules around how old students can be freshman year. Also yes there are some that allow soon to be 16 year old freshman. Private Schools like to exploit this by encouraging patents to hold their kids back because it makes more money for them. Parents that have gone down the path of holding their kid back will push for GY everywhere so their 16 year old freshman isnt an outcast.

I'm sure this exists but, and my 3 kids all go to one of the top private schools in the country, it is not what I see. Maybe for the private schools that focus on sports (IMG?) rather than academics, but not the elite academic private schools. That said, there are many, many summer birthdays that are the oldest in their class. It is rare for a July or August kid to be the youngest but this is definitely NOT about sports.

The same thing applies to academics. Often private schools encourage freshman coming in from other schools to retake freshman year. The reason for this is the private school makes more money off tuition. Also by retaking the same classes freshman year the students will get better grades. Which makes the school look good on standardized tests.

July/Aug makes total sense. Things get dicey when you start dipping into March-May, but again those kids are so few and far between, and there are probably other reasons for the hold back, that I'm not sure it makes any noticable impact. But who knows.

If it didnt make a noticeable impact in sports parents wouldn't be doing it. Happens all the time in basketball and football in public schools. Happens all the time in Lacrosse in private schools.

Soccer is an anomaly in that High School is considered lower level than Club. The private schools hate this and its why they create their own leagues. They want cheater rules but they dont want to play against the public schools.

It’s true. My son goes to an all boys school and a few schools are definitely taking it to the extreme. I was floored at how prevalent it is.
Anonymous
What’s funny is I was just scrolling on Facebook and a video came up with two guys who played D1 football power 5 schools who were holdbacks in 8th grade and said anyone who doesn’t hold back their sons for sports is stupid. They did a whole video on the benefits for holdbacks.

So they just play 8 games and the seasons over? The private schools where I’m from love playing public schools so they can beat them and try and recruit the best middle school kids in the area.

You're such a troll

Of course the private schools like playing public schools. A large number of their players are 1-2 years older than the public school players. There's a reason private schools and private school parents "regrade" their kids.

Its funny club parents endlessly complain about RAE while private school parents actively exploit it.

That’s because private school parents are smart.

I went to public high school with 3 guys that I knew of that turned 19 their senior year only one played sports and he wasn’t even that good. Hold back stuff usually has nothing to do with sports.

Yes some private school parents exploit it but I’d guess it’s less than 5% of kids in a graduating class. Stop fear mongering. It’s okay they’re just kids don’t be afraid of them.
