Yes, see how it works? 16 year old freshman = 20 year old senior Happens all the time in Lacrosse at private schools. |
There was someone pushing for GY earlier in this thread. Many people dont understand what GY really means and why parents are pushing for it. |
In California, as long as they turn 19 after June 15 they’re good to go. They graduate at or close to 20. |
I'm sure this exists but, and my 3 kids all go to one of the top private schools in the country, it is not what I see. Maybe for the private schools that focus on sports (IMG?) rather than academics, but not the elite academic private schools. That said, there are many, many summer birthdays that are the oldest in their class. It is rare for a July or August kid to be the youngest but this is definitely NOT about sports. |
The same thing applies to academics. Often private schools encourage freshman coming in from other schools to retake freshman year. The reason for this is the private school makes more money off tuition. Also by retaking the same classes freshman year the students will get better grades. Which makes the school look good on standardized tests. |
July/Aug makes total sense. Things get dicey when you start dipping into March-May, but again those kids are so few and far between, and there are probably other reasons for the hold back, that I'm not sure it makes any noticable impact. But who knows. |
Nope. |
If it didnt make a noticeable impact in sports parents wouldn't be doing it. Happens all the time in basketball and football in public schools. Happens all the time in Lacrosse in private schools. Soccer is an anomaly in that High School is considered lower level than Club. The private schools hate this and its why they create their own leagues. They want cheater rules but they dont want to play against the public schools. |
Read through this an educate yourself. 100% true. https://www.saraharberson.com/blog/what-does-it-mean-to-reclass-a-student |
It’s true. My son goes to an all boys school and a few schools are definitely taking it to the extreme. I was floored at how prevalent it is. |
What’s funny is I was just scrolling on Facebook and a video came up with two guys who played D1 football power 5 schools who were holdbacks in 8th grade and said anyone who doesn’t hold back their sons for sports is stupid. They did a whole video on the benefits for holdbacks. |
So they just play 8 games and the seasons over? The private schools where I’m from love playing public schools so they can beat them and try and recruit the best middle school kids in the area. |
Of course the private schools like playing public schools. A large number of their players are 1-2 years older than the public school players. There's a reason private schools and private school parents "regrade" their kids. Its funny club parents endlessly complain about RAE while private school parents actively exploit it. |
That’s because private school parents are smart. |
I went to public high school with 3 guys that I knew of that turned 19 their senior year only one played sports and he wasn’t even that good. Hold back stuff usually has nothing to do with sports. Yes some private school parents exploit it but I’d guess it’s less than 5% of kids in a graduating class. Stop fear mongering. It’s okay they’re just kids don’t be afraid of them. |
