I've never seen the show (and never will), I know a little about the family only from appearances on the Today show, and I didn't read about this case until today. I read one freaking article, and now I can't stop thinking about it. It is just so disturbing - even more than I thought possible. The parts of the interview that made it into the Post article I read this morning are stomach turning. The Dad said it was a "child preying on a child" like that is some kind of excuse. Disgusting. This isn't about a couple of 13 year olds. If I caught the facts right, he was 14 and the victim was 4.

Ah, yes, because that's exactly what Nepal needs right now. An additional pair of Bible thumpers preying on desperate people in the midst of devastation to recruit converts. Are they going to hand them cookies for listening to their sermons?

Actually Derrick worked both with infrastructure and helping local businesses. Jill has said she wanted to help as a midwife.

I'm embarrassed that I know this: the son at "firefighting school" is actually at "Alert Training Camp" which is an indoctrination camp run by their cult. It is structured like a military boot camp to build "God's Army" full of Godly men with skills in case of apocalypse. Josh was sent here right after the police investigation.

Jill was apprenticed to a licensed lay midwife, until her mentor lost her license for making a mistake about group b strep. Then Jill lost her permit.

That's interesting. I didn't know lay midwives had any licensing. I actually don't think they are legal here, all the midwives seem to be RNs/Certified Professional Midwives.

It varies by state. Arkansas requires "direct entry" (meaning no RN/medical background) midwives to be licensed.

It also doesn't speak to her ability to be a midwife in Nepal. She has training and experience. I don't know whether she would be allowed to practice midwifery in Nepal or not.

Now that the new police report has come to light and I have seen the interview I believe the media and public opinion has blown this way way out of proportion.
