Ebola Containment Efforts Hindered by USAID Shutdown

New York Times: “The Ebola crisis in East Africa is rapidly escalating, with cases now confirmed in major population centers in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. Public health experts around the world and health workers on the ground say that the response has been significantly hindered by the near-absence so far of the United States, historically the leader in any major outbreak.”

“The United States used to fund robust disease surveillance networks across the region and maintained emergency teams to take charge in public health crises like this one. Much of that work ended with the shutdown of the U.S. Agency for International Development early last year.”

The US needs to bail out countries and WHO that don't know how to function without the US footing the bill.

We weren't just footing the bill; we were managing people on the ground.

To the benefit of humanity, including us, our health, and our national security.

Do you want us to be a leader and share our talents for good, or do you want to sit in the corner like a petulant preteen refusing to unload the dishwasher because Sis didn't do her chore?

If a country is a failure, let it fail. Just don't let them come here to restart a failed miniature version of their country.

Helping to curtail outbreaks of a horrific, high mortality, disease that causes people to literally bleed out of their eyeballs, is a matter of national defense, frankly. Doesn't matter how tight the border. Viruses find a way.

First of all, how did you get half a million children died? Because it was reported and re-reported?

It's a projection and a BS one at that. They make it up and throw it against the wall hoping it will stick.

Frankly, USAID was being used as a weaponized political tool. You can see Mike Benz for all the dirty details and evidence he brings forth on just what the hell was going on with those NGOs.

More than that, it was a funding mechanism for the dem party. YUP. Kick some money out to X country and then a little trickles back to the DNC.

THAT is what was going on.

PP, it’s a wasted effort to try to convince MAGA of anything that runs counter to Cheeto Mussolini and Elon Musk beliefs. MAGA drank the kool-aid.

What did obama do, the US isn't responsible for EBOLA in africa, if anything the US should just stop flights to and from there including any connecting ones from other countries.

You're a real piece of work. The Daily did a show on this today and the point about USAID is that there may have been USAID employees/supported orgs that were on the ground to a) identify that it was ebola earlier (as it was, there was about a 3 mos. lag time that allowed it to spread in that period, unchecked and b) provide early support until International Medical Corp/Doctors w/o Borders, and other entities checked in. It's spread to Uganda and there are now fears it has spread to south sudan.

For the strain at issue, there is no vaccine. People are dying and it is already the 3d largest outbreak in history.

No amount of fiscal constraint or worries about 'bailing out" another country takes precedence over something like this. Not if you have any ounce of humanity.

Stop with your BS lies. He's American and your racist tirade does not change that. And as for the last point, Trump is now in a pickle b/c he can't go back to the status quo -and Obama's deal- without looking like the failure he is. So we are left with his Iran dumpster fire. yeah, I can see how that is preferable.

Let me see if I can explain this to you simply. Someone gets on a flight from an African country. That person has EBOLA. They don't get on a "connecting flight", but spend a day in a European country and then get on a non connecting flight to the US. Voila! EBOLA has been brought to America. Or they give EBOLA to someone in that European country who then gets on a flight to America. Voila! EBOLA has been brought to America. Do you get it?

Or how about this . . . US troops are deployed to a country where someone has EBOLA and they are infected. Or a worker for a cruise ship brings it on board and the ship stops in an American port. Etc., etc.

EBOLA WAS brought to America during Obama’s term. A nurse DID get on a plane after treating that patient. Guess what happened? NOTHING

Because we had a competent response system and quickly isolated the infected people. The current outbreak is uncontrolled in Africa and will probably be in the US soon enough. Good luck with our current CDC.

The MAGA idiots are out in force. If only they would be the only ones who would suffer for their stupidity but they will take everyone else down with them.

I'd really love to send all MAGA to an island somewhere. Morons.
