Just watched an FSU focused blog video that reported the same--that the ACC will conduct an actual formal vote, as opposed to the prior straw poll, tomorrow Friday, August 18, 2023 on whether or not to add Cal, Stanford, and SMU. Hard to tell whether or not there are enough votes to lead to an expansion of the ACC. Maybe the formal vote is being taken to show respect for Condi Rice & former President George W. Bush who are lobbying on behalf of Stanford & SMU respectively.

SMU is willing to play for free for 5 to 7 years and Stanford is willing to play for a fractional share of the payout, but Cal needs the money--especially with the anticipated increase of travel expenses. If Stanford & SMU forego all or most of the media rights payouts from ESPN, there will be more money to spread around to the other ACC member schools.

FSU is opposed because FSU wants out of the ACC and into the Big Ten Conference. FSU would prefer that the ACC collapse so that it could get its media rights returned.

Notre Dame is fighting for expansion of the ACC because Notre Dame wants to remain independent and a strong ACC helps Notre Dame do so as Notre Dame's Olympic sports have ACC conference membership.

Any of the 4 are open to flipping because the are state schools at the end of the day controlled by politicians. Clemson is the most likely to flip. Maybe none of them do but I would bet on Clemson if anyone. ND could agree to play 8 against ACC as part of this.

The schools for it do not care for two reasons. One they want Stanford. Two without expansion the ACC is dead no later than 2036 but perhaps earlier. Expansion and extra cost vs no power conference is a no brainer.

Stanford is not saving the ACC after the GoR expires and we already know that at least 4 schools do not want Stanford. Do you think the president or AD from wake wants to explain to irate alumni why their sports have to be cut due to increased travel expenses?

How being in the same athletic conference translates into research cooperation is wishful thinking at best. At the end of day revenue / $$ will be the primary deciding factor
