DC Public and Public Charter Schools
| We are quite high on our first choice OOB school, so out of curiosity, I looked up the tracking numbers of those ahead of us to see if perhaps they will go elsewhere. One of the numbers, 6521, is listed as having OOB w/ sibling preference at FIVE schools. FIVE. This person got into his/her first choice and is waitlisted in the top 3 at all of the other four schools. Another applicant ahead of us is listed as OOB w/sibling preference at 2 schools. Now, I can believe that one child might have siblings or step-siblings at more than one school, but I'm having trouble believing that any applicant currently has siblings at five elementary schools. If my suspicions are right, it seems this applicant should be disqualified outright. |
If you think there are issues - call the DCPS and report it. Here is the # (202) 478-5738 If it is true and the "scammed" the system. There are probably others out there who have figured out how to play the game as well and DCPS needs to make sure that they put a stop to it. |

so this person has a child with a sibling at Houston, Eaton, Janney, Brent and Key? Grr.
Claiming one has a sibling was as easy as checking the box. SO MADDENING! Pls call DCPS. |
| Schools are suppose to check for evidence of sibling before just accepting the next person on the list. I am not sure that they do but that is suppose to be the process. |

Sometimes it is embarrassing to be a member of this community. Should we form a mob? Would that satisfy you all? If this is what it's come to, checking other people's numbers and breathlessly reporting them to an anonymous board, then wow. "Disqualified" outright? No education for you!
But, if this snooping of yours bothers you, contact DCPS, and who knows, perhaps it is a scam. Perhaps it is not. But before getting people up in arms, why not check into it FIRST, then if there is something fishy reporting it? |
|
OP here. My intent was not to snoop. My DC was accepted at a private school we like, but we like our first choice OOB public better, and would send DC there if we got in. Before we send in a hefty deposit to the private school, we wanted to get a better sense of our odds at the public, so I looked to see if higher placed candidates may have been accepted elsewhere. I don't know what is offensive about that - I wasn't looking for anything other than my child's odds. I certainly wasn't expecting to find what I did. I played by the rules in this lottery, as I would guess almost everyone did. And it galls me that someone who clearly did not is placed ahead of almost every kid - including mine - on the waitlists at five schools. That's just plain cheating. And I only looked up a handful of numbers, which makes me wonder how many people are gaming this and what DCPS can do about it. |
|
I applaud you OP. I hope you report whoever it is to DCPS. A Lottery should be fair.
I am amazed at PP who criticized the OP. If you find blatant cheating, wouldn't you report it? |

before you get your panties in a wad, you should know that the schools DO check out sibling enrollment BEFORE they admit new students. if you lied, you will get caught. enrollment at most of these schools is low enough (below 300 pupils) that the principals pretty much know all the kids, as do the teachers. there is no skirting the system in this way. lying will get you nowhere, and will probably bust your chances of getting in ANYWHERE.
just because you got into a school doesn't mean you are automatically enrolled. there is paperwork! |
Please give us a reasonable explanation as to how someone can have OOB w siblings in 5 schools. |
For the OP it sounds like a question of timing. Will those public schools have checked all the paperwork and offered her DC a spot before she has to pay the deposit at the private school? If not, then knowing that a potential scammer will be caught doesn't help her at all. OP, if you're concerned and really do think it looks fishy, call DCPS. |
Two sets of twins and a stepchild. 4 foster children pending adoption. Grandparent with guardianship over 6 kids. Just because you don't know large families doesn't mean there aren't any.
Or, it could be a computer glitch. Take your moral outrage and whatever "proof" to Bill Turque or City Paper before potentially invading someone's privacy. The real outrage is that education is so linked to zip code and lotteries in the first place. |
|
OP. I did call DCPS. And was told that they "would look into it." And that the person will have to demonstrate that the applicant has a sibling at the school before starting school there. For those of us trying to figure out if we need to make other plans, "wait until school starts" is not particularly helpful. |
Thought this response was hilarious. You really must have no moral core whatsoever. "Do you people really have nothing better to do than try to thwart amoral cheaters who subvert the school system??"

Reminds me of my DW at the Starbuck's the other day. The woman ahead of her in line didn't have enough money for coffee and a paper, so she decided to make up the shortfall by pillaging the barristas' tip jar.
DW called her out on it, and the scumbag told her to "mind your own business." Sorry, but there are immoral cretins who live among us. It is absolutely our duty to shine a little light on their shitty behavior whenever possible. |
| What would have been really nice is if your DW had just offered to buy the woman's coffee. |
