Hints for getting miralax down?

Anonymous
My 3.5 yr old dd is having poop issues and the dr gas prescribed miralax to make it easier for her. She does not like juice & mostly drinks water. I can't hide it in water. Have you hidden it in a milkshake or soda? I'm at a loss how else to get it in. She is aFraid of having a poop, so she holds it in until she can't, and then cries about pooping. Any assurances or been there done that or practical ideas would be appreciated. For example, now it's tues night and she has not pooped since sat am, before that it had been the tuesday before. I have tried to explain to her but it's almost a phobia now.

We always mixed in it juice and later soda. But you dont want to start with soda. What about milk? Not ideal, but maybe lemonade? Good luck. It helped our dd a bit when the pediatrician spoke to her directly, but she was a little older.

we went through this exact scenario and it sucked! i am sorry for what you are going through.

i tried putting it in milk once and it got really funky and frothy. but she didn't seem to notice all that much.

a friend of mine said she used to put it in root beer floats. never tried it but seemed like a good idea.

maybe in food? ice cream? yogurt?

good luck, i hope it works...definitely worked for us but we had to keep using it for quite a long time. we stopped a few times hoping things would improve and she'd go right back to withholding. but happy to report that now at age almost 4 she doesn't need the miralax anymore and things are great. she started having this issue right before age 2 and was on the miralax for almost a year.

we do "honey milk" -- milk sweetened with honey.

You may just need to do what you have to do break out of the poop/pain cycle. I've had to give my DD more juice than I would like to get the Miralax down, because she was suffering terribly. Will your DD drink a smoothie with fruit and yogurt? Those baby suppositories work fairly well but obviously you can't use them regularly. Again, I would do whatever you have to in order to clean her out and break her association of pooping and pain. Then perhaps keep her on a steady diet of foods high in fiber. I remember a friend telling me about fiber supplements she gave to her daughter but I wouldn't do that without consulting with the pediatrician. Good luck!

You've gotten some good hints about hiding the Miralax. To break the poop/pain cycle, use a glycerin suppository.

Our DS has been on miralax since age 2.5. We started by putting it in his rice milk but he stopped drinking that now its in juice or even water. You might see it in the water but it has no flavor although it is a little bit grainy. For us we put it whatever he will drink, its more important he gets his regular dose in whatever way he can. We have put it in fruit smoothies etc. We also found that if we did a small quantity of liquid to the 1/2 cupful he was sure to finish it and get the full dose. If we put it too much liquid he wouldn't drink it all and then we were never sure how much Miralax he had gotten until he had problems going poop. It really has made all the different in the pain/withholding cycle.

Milk works just fine (I've done this for over a year). So does CHOCOLATE milk (my kids can't resist it no matter what's in it). I'm very explicit about it--you need to drink your chocolate milk because it has your medicine in it. I would not resort to soda unless you absolutely have to. Wouldn't want my kids to develop a taste for it. Also, fruit smoothies, but you need to put the Miralax in a small amount of the smoothie because they are very filling and you want them to finish it all.

I put mine in gatorade. I would put it in water, shake it up to dissolve, then put gatorade on top of that. She usually drank that all up.

We use to put it in applesauce.

We put it in milk. DS never knew.

I give it to my son almost every night (just a small dose). I mix it in milk and put a little bit of chocolate syrup in it. He's never even noticed.

My 2.5 DD withholds too, i hate it. I just mix the miralax into water and hand it to her. I tell her it's her medicine and that it will help her poop not to hurt. She drinks it up and is proud of herself. We used to give it to her in a medicine syringe. good luck

My son has been on it for about 2 years (which the pediatrician claims is fine). I used to mix it in chocolate milk because he complained about the taste. Then I also used the strategy of really explaining what it was for and how it would help him. Now he drinks it just fine in plain water. I put it in a sippy cup and shake it, maybe not seeing it floating around makes a difference.
