can we just step back a moment and reflect on how WILD all this is?
i didn't really think trump was smart enough to be a spy but i guess he's showing me. i know it's all conjecture now - but what is our best guess about what he was doing/going to do with these documents? |
Without the naked part, please. |
The moment Trump thought he won, was the moment that sealed his fate |
There is no precedent for this to begin to predict where or how quickly this will go. Given the nature of what's happening here, I expect that DOJ would try to keep things under wrap as long as possible and try not to make the nature of the investigation public information until they were just about ready to file formal criminal charges. But in this instance, given what has been disclosed about the nature of the documents seized, it is possible that national security concerns forced DOJ to act sooner than they otherwise might have wanted to. |

DOJ also had to be keenly aware of timing and reports that Trump could announce his candidacy before the midterms. The closer to November the more problematic. |
| For those interested in the legal side of this, I would recommend following Steve Vladeck on Twitter (@steve_vladeck). He's a brilliant constitutional law scholar generally, but national security is his particular area of expertise. |
Agreed. The dynamics of this would have fundamentally changed if Trump had announced his candidacy before the investigation became public. |

Item 2 is a "Leatherbound box of documents" which contained item 2A "Various classified/TS/SCI documents"
There's your mens rea right there. |

Let's pause here and summarize: We have a former President of the most powerful country in the world who was just found illegally withholding top secret documents and other documents with an even more sensitive categorization, some of which have to do with the leader of an allied country, and some of which has been alleged to be nuclear information. It has been confirmed that the government made every effort to get these back before the FBI warrant, and that Trump did not declassify these documents. It has been surmised that Trump did this to continue finding ways to stay in power. Or that he or someone close to him decided to sell or exchange this information for personal gain (Saudi money to Jared?). Knowing Trump's penchant for sharing secrets with dictators in an effort to impress them, there is concern some sensitive information could make its way to enemies of the western world. It's tiring to repeat, but in my wildest nightmares, I did not expect Trump to reach this low and endanger not just the US this time, but the world. Therefore, I suppose he's done, or will do, even worse, unless he's permanently stopped. |
It’s called the weekend. |
