1) there could be a rogue juror to scuttle the whole thing
2) this is today money. Once the case ends, it could be years of appeals
3) the lawyers and company are beholden to the shareholders, not the American public

I think $787 million speaks louder than any apology would have. It's big enough that it shows that Fox is not just settling as the cost of litigation. Im Happy with this outcome. It shows that Fox is dirty and admits guilt. and i could imagine them being so desperate to avoid a public trial that they sweated and scrambled to settle, lol. This outcome is better than a trial; they would have just continued to lie on the stand
