Why? It sounds like Op and her siblings are all productive members of society. Op is a surgeon for Pete’s sake. With the amount of wealth she has, she could have chosen a much less stressful career and one that did not involve so many years of grueling training. Also, there are different types of family offices. They may not have an entire firm like some very well known wealthy families. Based on this article, we do not know how large the family office is or their level of wealth.

So tired of this. Yet again, its mostly ONLY wealthy people who go to medical school. You cant take an unpaid internship or even a partially paid internship if you arent supported by mommy and daddy. Medical school prep, applications, interviews are all cost prohibitive. FULL STOP. Failing biochem- get a tutor. Dont have time to get groceries- pay for delivery. Dont have time to clean your clothes because you are studying- pay for laundry. Need to be close to the hospital- get an apartment so that you dont waste precious time commuting and can sleep/study more.

The only people I know who went to medical school and law school were the working class and middle class. Wealthy people went to get MBAs

The data on medical school applicants does not support your personal anecdotes.

I was prepared to roll my eyes, but I actually really liked the OP! With her family money I'm sure she could've skated by with some easy degree and cruised into some BS office job that her contacts got her, but she chose a route where she's making a difference in others lives and requires a tremendous amount of hard work and perseverance. Certainly having all that generational wealth and cultural capital helped her on her career path -- good schools, good tutors, ability to freely volunteer/do internships/research without having to worry about paying rent or tuition, no worries about med school application fees etc. -- but no one becomes a surgeon without tremendous grit, intellect, and discipline.

She helped a student from her high school with her project, seems like a great aunt to her niece and nephew and had a "girls night" with a niece struggling socially. She donates a respectable amount to charity. Sure, she's probably very intense and type A (don't you have to be in that line of work?!) and I'd probably only be able to spend a limited amount of time with her if I knew her in real life LOL. But really, from what we see in this money diary (and I know that doesn't tell the whole story), she seems like a good, grounded person.

Good for her!

Women are obviously over represented lol

I got so close. I found a female surgeon at GW who graduated from Harvard in 2008, so that would put her right at the age of the surgeon in the diary. But no, a Google search reveals that that surgeon lives in McLean...

No one even in the realm of possibility at Georgetown.

now onto the Sibley list...

She likely works at a NoVA hospital. She mentioned picking up a case of wine at Total Wines on the way home from work - there's none in DC or in nearby MD suburbs. Total Wine is all over Northern VA. She wouldn't go out of her way from DC to visit a Total Wine to save a few bucks, plenty of good wine shops in Georgetown (we live here, we know what's around).

oh, good catch.

I don’t know - old money I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s white. If not, my guess is Indian. Does it matter?

Cauliflower “aloo gobi” is an ethnic Indian dish which she prepared on one occasion. Also there are a number of Indian lady
Surgeons in the area. I would bet she is an Indian or part Indian.

My guess is black

I thought Indian, based on the food descriptions.

My guess is big Indian or Persian family.

Indian people don't have great-grandparents in this country.

We've only been allowed to immigrate for the past 40-50 years.

If they live in Georgetown, could have been a diplomatic family. Or only part of the family is Indian.

You are really reaching now. Lol. The Indian community is tiny in DC, in all of America actually, it would be well known if there was a 30 something multi-millionaire Indian doctor in DC whose family has been here for a minimum of 80 years. Even writing that out is absurd. India wasn't even an independent country until 1948.

Now if she's Indian and married some old money WASP or a black or Jewish man from generational wealth, that could be plausible but then that townhouse was inherited from his side, not her
s.

Im a third gen Indian American. Great granddad was a physician who emigrated to the US in the early 1950s.

Oh please. A person’s not automatically Indian because they eat Indian food

How old are you?

You would need to be a fourth generation Indian American.

And he would have immigrated to the US, not emigrated to the US. You could also use migrated.

Troll fail.

How big do we think her engagement ring is? I'm guessing a 3ct round with pave band, but could see her wearing a plain gold band for surgery.

It’s her wealth, not his. Why should she pay for it?

Is this a serious question?? They’re married.

Do you think Mark Zuckerberg has Priscilla Chan still working to pay off her medical school debt??

I remember Nicole Shanahan who is the wife of Sergey Brin (billionaire and founder of google) talk about her student loans in a video. I’m sure Brin who is now her husband has paid it off for her.

I find it bizarre that she has her husband working to pay it off. Given she has a family office she can afford it. I’m assuming that he is going to be the father of her children so...???

Yes, it’s a serious question. It was my question, actually. Clearly, having a prenup, this family doesn’t think like you do. Why on earth would she pay his loans off after securing a prenup?

I’m the person that asked if this is a serious question. She’s smart to have a prenup. Never disagreed with that. And honestly, doesn’t sound like a family I would marry into. There are plenty of wealthy families that aren’t like this one and actually kind.

And she is not kind, because?

DP- I think she sounds confident and generous with her immediate family, which is great, but she doesn’t sound kind. The insistence on her husband paying his own loan and fantasizing about setting up her sister with her DH’s friend just after she met his sweet gf (wtf?) just gives off an unkind vibe. She seems awesome in some ways but is probably overbearing and controlling in real life.

Where do you see that she "insisted" her husband pays his own loan?

She was a tri delta. Please DCUM researchers find this woman. I am fascinated! Can I apply to be her nanny?

"Hi there! I'm OP! We were contributing equally to our savings when I was in residency/fellowship and my husband was paying off his student loans and our pre-nup was written to reflect that. Now that our incomes are so different, I contribute more to the amount that we save every month so the document needs to be updated to match. We're also planning on trying for a baby soon, so we wanted to add some things regarding that as well.”
If not insisted, why include it in prenup?

My family office is the weird little desk in our un-renovated kitchen.

I mean, its more like living on 700K/year and a huge family wealth. With what they have in expenses (loans & home) they are making more like 900-$1 million per year?!

They don’t have loans or home expenses. All they have to pay is $1k/month for property tax. So yeah once you take mortgage out of the equation they are more able to live like they’re making $800 or $900k.
