Out of 11 pages now on this thread -- it sounds as though only a few children actually attend or have attended an Ivy. Other posters just can't seem to resist throwing stones or opinions.

My children are still in primary school. But, a nephew and niece, are at an Ivy and MIT respectively. They both always had goals to do the best job and put their best foot forward at all times. It helped their role models (parents) were highly educated individuals. Thus, kids were top of class (grades, SATs > 740 all sections), 3 sport athletes (girl was captain of 2 sports) and both multi-lingual (Japanese, Mandarin). Their parents philosophy is similar to mine. We are not tolerant of children wasting idle time in front of the TV, video games and the Wii. The kids were guided to sports, languages, music, art and books at a young age. The kids participated in the activities around them in the household. The parents saw to it that this was the case. They all enjoyed these activities and more importantly, the parents and extended family participated in many of these activities alongside their children. Both kids are well adjusted and leaders in their spheres of influence. This approach has worked best in our family. It is clearly not the prescription for all and there are many ways to skin a cat.

Yes, they sure sound like a barrel of laughs.

I wonder who gets the last laugh.

Indeed pp - indeed!

Then it must leave the poster with the empty barrell.

That's a good one pp. I really can't understand why someone would knock such a nice sounding family whose children have worked so hard and done so well.

What get's me is not the knock, per se, but the cowardly and spineless inability to bring any insights to the table.
I guess too much to expect from an empty barrell.

Yes - that too above poster

I don't get what OP was expecting. Top grades, top test scores and standout sports or other activitiy/ies. The stories are stunningly similar.

Some folk, even if they are told so over and over again, still want to hear it one last time.
