DC wants to withdraw from magnet program

Magnet middle school in MOCo sounds too scary. They using smart kids to bus them into magnet programs in bad schools to bring up the rating. That’s so bad. Better to stay in your own home middle school in a competitive area where there’s a peer group . They don’t do this shit in other states. If u live in a good high tax area then the elementary school, MS and high schools should be good.... this is the case in NJ.

Other states? They don’t even do this shit in other counties. I can’t believe how many people fall for this BS. Well, yes I can. I did and my daughter left HGC after 6 months and never looked back. The school was terrible and the commute is basically child neglect. I still feel terrible I encouraged her to try it. So stupid.

You just resurrected a 4-month old thread to write an uninformed, prejudiced rant at the level of a 4th grader (but not a magnet 4th grader!). I think people can decide who makes the intelligent decisions here.

I think parents are realizing this more now, especially with the cohort criteria that MCPS implemented two years ago.

MS Magnets truly used to be super high achieving kids from all over the county. So it was ‘worth it’ to send your kid there. But now, that is not the case.

We know of many families who did choose the CES for ES but then adamantly declined the MS Magnet admission.

Agree that it is a strange setup in MoCo. But MCPS is an incredibly dysfunctional school system, unfortunately.

I've also heard some parents will even trash talk these programs to discourage others in the hopes of getting their kids off the waitlist.

DP. It's just sour grapes for PP whose snowflake didn't get in despite having gone to Dr. Li's.
