Probabley the same reason the MLS clubs are pulling out of DA. It's a horrible waste of time, energy and resources.

USSF is lazy and wants everyone else to do their jobs. More restrictions and less profit for the club while USSF rakes in the dough. The clubs are tired of it. Hence, moving to ECNL.

Maybe Spirit told both MD and VA that Spirit was getting out of youth after the 19-20 season, and the MD team decided to make the break a year early?

Time will tell with the VA teams, but the MD teams are already split from Spirit for next year.

may not happen this year but if you think spirit will be a part of VA DA for years to come you are wrong. gone by 2020/2021 probably. I suspect it was just easier situation in MD than it is in VA to get this done quicker.
