SOCCER AMERICA: Your club, Real Colorado, is one of a handful that fields teams in both the ECNL, launched in 2009, and the Girls U.S. Soccer Development Academy, which started in 2017 and is now in its second season. How do you manage both?

LORNE DONALDSON: I think we have a good staff and our management is good. We really have no problem. We have the fields to do it. And we have the players because the kids want to play for us because it’s a good environment.

We have a good pool of players, and it’s going to get better if they allow us to stay in both leagues. But who knows what’s going to happen now? I think there are going to be some decisions coming up.

SA: You may not continue fielding teams in both the Girls DA and the ECNL?

LORNE DONALDSON: The ECNL wanted us to get out of [the Development Academy]. There are some clubs already out of the ECNL. They have been kicked out.

The ECNL thinks that at the clubs that play both ECNL and DA, your top players are playing in the DA and the second-string players are playing in the ECNL. They [the ECNL] want all the top players. The ECNL is saying, you can’t do both. You can just do one.

SA: So what do you think will happen next season (2019-20)?

LORNE DONALDSON: I don’t know yet for sure if we’re going to be in both. Three or four days ago, I told them if we come to the ECNL, we want two teams [in each age group]. They have to go and discuss it.

SA: Because if you leave the Girls DA, about half the Real Colorado players who now play in the Girls DA and ECNL will no longer be playing in one of the nation’s elite girls leagues?

LORNE DONALDSON: Yes. If we're only going to play ECNL, we can’t just take one team. It doesn’t make any sense. We would like to see both teams in if we’re going to do it. We have the environment to do it. But that’s a discussion with the ECNL.

SA: And if it comes down to making a choice between the two?

LORNE DONALDSON: Then most likely we would stay in the DA. We will lose our ECNL group.

So all you you ECNL backers, the truth is pretty much exposed in this interview. The ONLY reason clubs are going to ECNL is the promise of double the profits of fielding two teams.

Tophat, Real Colorado and FC Dallas are also now out of ECNL and ALL IN at DA.

https://toq6dn5q7q7tsrs5-zippykid.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/2019-20-Girls-ECNL-Club-Map-May-21-2019.001.jpeg

So some clubs chose to go “all-in” with ECNL and some chose DA? What’s the point? Each organization has their own motivations and they can pick the league that works for them. You think PDA went back into ECNL so they could “double profits”? You do realize these are youth soccer teams with little to no profit? ECNL is “barely above revel level soccer” vouldn’t be further from the truth.

Posts like this are the reason everybody attacks spirit (now mu).

This isn't a Spirit/MU thing. But in case you don't remember the great thread titled: More defections from DA to ECNL
https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/787043.page

Exactly what club should be "attacked" for that?

It is league, landscape discussion. That the post was within a thread about a DA club is more than appropriate.

This:

SA: As it is now, for the last two seasons, how is it decided which Real Colorado girls play in the DA and which play in the ECNL?

LORNE DONALDSON: I’m not going to try to sugarcoat. Most of the better players wanted to play in the DA. But there are some very good players, and a few top players, who decided they wanted to play ECNL because they wanted to also play for their high school.

If you want to play high school, play ecnl. If you don’t want to play high school, play DA. It’s pretty simple. It also varies by region.!in Colorado, the best players play DA. In Seattle, the best players play ecnl. In NOVA/MD it’s a mix.

The talent mix is heavily tilted towards the GDA in this area.

Maybe it depends on the age group. But yes it is. And people shouldn’t take it as a slight. There are good players in ECNL, but the overall talent is concentrated in DA.

Let’s take a look at this statement regarding girls. In MD: Pipeline, Mont. Rush Coyotes, and Celtic are the three best clubs. Non are GDA. Non are ECNL either. Pipeline has some girls that played PT for Spirit MD DA, but when they did not show up WSMD got crushed typically. Next best club is Bethesda ECNL. So in MD ECNL and EDP are the best, not DA.

In Northern VA: FCV DA is the best. Then Arlington DA. Close between those two clubs. But after these two it is McLean ECNL. At oldest ages BRYC ECNL is better than Loudoun and VDA ECNL or MU DA. At younger ages it is a toss up between these four clubs. So will give slight edge to DA in VA simply due to FCV and Arlington.

Not the OP but the commenter was commenting on talent not clubs. You can have very talented players mixed with a few players out of their depth who can platoon teams for wins. Conversely, you can win games by blasting the ball down the field with big and fast players, this doesn’t equal talent either. The statement that was made had to do with an evaluation of the individual soccer players in DA on average vs the others, not a record comparison of clubs, as you seem to have taken it.

The area DA is weak with the exception of FCV.

Point set match. No need to argue

Without the joysticking of the three coaches screaming, most of your team couldn’t fight their way out of a wet paper bag. Go peddle your record on the ASA thread.

exactly.

Ahh... the poster with the skilled but weak and unathletic kid. In case you did not notice, soccer is a SPORT. It is not hacky-sack or dance. Speed, strength, and size ARE talent. So are skill and smarts. All five working in combination. So tired of simple minded parents that think it is only about ball skills and ball possession. There are times to posses and times to be direct. Times to use fastest kid on the team's talents and times to use the best passer, dribbler, composed, etc. Come up with a better statistic then such as: most "D1" players; most "pros"; most people that you personally think are really good based on your "expert" opinion? Please, enlighten us oh soccer guru.

Wrong! Size is not a talent but a trait. There are 4 tall kids on my sons soccer team that break our team! This is what good coaches mainly look for :
Good first touch/ kick string right/left
Always hustling to great angles for passing / good with and without ball.
Agility/ great endurance
Player thing as a team, we not me
You lose the ball you get it back
Constantly fighting for the ball/never letting your guard down

It’s just awful how there are some coaches who will pick a bigger player lacking these skills over someone
Who deserves to be on the team.
