Why do some care about rules about gay people but ignore rule about shrimp, rape, and stoning women?

Sure I believe a lot of religious traditions have legitimate ways of accessing the spiritual realm (which I don't believe involves communion with a Judeo-Christian God), but Christianity sure doesn't preach that.

No. That is not true.

It's not true that Christians believe the only way to God is through Jesus? Then what, exactly, do Christians mean when they say "Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior"?

NP. Plenty of Christians believe in salvation through works. The debate about “works vs. faith” has gone on for centuries, which should tell you that there have always been many Christians who think it’s about works. That’s why some (most?) of the mainline Protestant denominations believe that someone who doesn’t know Jesus but lives a “Christ-like” life can get into heaven. Jesus showed us how to live, and that’s how he “saved” mankind.

I'm unaware of any Christian denomination that says you can have salvation by works alone. I thought it was either by faith alone or by faith and works.

Jesus didn't just give a good example of how to be a good person. You have to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior (and, according to some but not all Christian denominations, be a good person) to get into heaven. Anyone who says otherwise is just misunderstanding what Christianity says about salvation.

I’m so tired of non-Christians telling us what they think we should believe....

You're upset that I'm suggesting Christianity is, in large part, accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? You're upset that I'm pointing out that salvation by works alone isn't a thing?

This is false. The Pope has said even atheists can get into heaven. As far as "salvation," salvation from what?

Only a fraction of Christians follow the pope.

ah, so a schism within the faith? A theological dispute? Not surprising. Still I think the Pope is probably more of an authority on Christianity than you are.

If the Pope made an authoritative statement, then there should be a Biblical and theological basis for it. So, what is it? How do atheists get into Heaven, according to the Pope? What is Heaven, if not communion with Christ, and how could an atheist have it?

Yeah I'll take the actual bible over the pope any day.

Except the problem is, if you're Catholic, the Pope's word is supposed to be infallible, so you can't exactly dismiss what he has to say.

Did the pope even say this? I doubt it. You are probably misrepresenting what he said.

Also, most Christians are not Catholic!

Because it is convenient for bigots to find a biblical text to support their horrid beliefs, that's why.

No it’s because Christians are bound by NEW TESTAMENT, not OLD TESTAMENT LAW. If you are going to claim that Christians are bigots and like to pick and choose, you should at least educate yourself on how biblical laws work.

People like you are the reason why there’s so much confusion and hate for Christians, because you spread ignorant lies without doing your research first.

Yeah the Pope absolutely DID NOT say "Atheists can go to heaven." Heaven is communion with Christ. Atheists cannot do that. Please read words carefully before you attribute ideas to someone like the Pope.

Here is what Francis said:

Francis explained himself, "The Lord created us in His image and likeness, and we are the image of the Lord, and He does good and all of us have this commandment at heart, do good and do not do evil. All of us. 'But, Father, this is not Catholic! He cannot do good.' Yes, he can... "The Lord has redeemed all of us, all of us, with the Blood of Christ, all of us, not just Catholics. Everyone! 'Father, the atheists?' Even the atheists. Everyone!" We must meet one another doing good. 'But I don't believe, Father, I am an atheist!' But do good: we will meet one another there."

It's not exactly clear to me what Francis is trying to say. We will meet one another "there?" What is he referring to? It seems to me like he is saying that atheists can do good in the world and we can meet each other halfway in our lives on Earth. I don't see reference to Heaven or salvation in his words.

So is there one heaven for Christians and a different one for Jews, and Muslims and Hindus? Isn't it bigotry to say there is only one way to heaven and it's through our guy and the rest of you are out of luck? I think that's what the Pope was addressing.

I don’t think bigotry means what you think it means. Are Muslims bigoted because they don’t believe Christians go to Heaven?

Really? Definition of bigotry
1 : obstinate or intolerant devotion to one's own opinions and prejudices :

^ I think this is what you are with your communion with Jesus dogma, but the Pope, to his credit, was trying to disavow that viewpoint.

It’s not my opinion, it’s Christian dogma, and the pope was only trying to put a gentler spin on it, but he didn’t really say salvation is for non-Christians. I don’t really have an opinion on you or where you end up.

I’m sorry that’s so upsetting to you. I would consider why you feel so strongly about the belief system of a religion you don’t believe in. I’ll ask again- are you also upset that you are not going to heaven under Islam? Are Muslims also bigoted?

I have no opinion on that, but the Muslims believe they can go to heaven and I think the Pope does as well.

No, Muslims do not believe that non-Muslims go to heaven. There is actually a lot of offensive rhetoric in Muslim countries about infidels. Muslims also call the Muslim community around the world the “ummah”-isn’t that bigotry under your definition? Isn’t it bigoted that the Muslim community specifically excludes non Muslims from their community? Isn’t it bigoted that in Muslim countries non Muslims often have to follow a different set of civil laws, and in some cases are excluded from public office and the presidency? Aren’t Muslims bigoted under your definition?

How about Jewish people referring to themselves as “chosen?” Yowza, that sounds super bigoted to me.

Also, if the pope thought non Christians can go to heaven he would have actually said so.
