All of the people that react with shock when people recommend Baltimore City Public Schools, particularly the magnet schools, should check out where Baltimore Poly scored. Kids of all races are scoring great there.

Yes, but then people get stabbed in the neck while trying to generously give a person in need money. —> see the latest news report about an innocent woman getting stabbed to death. The crime in Baltimore is horrendous, we will pass.

Poly and City actually have admissions criteria. They aren't neighborhood schools. Only the best go there and stay there.

How can a school that's predominately white and affluent get a 4? Practically zero ESOL. Less than 10% farms.

That speaks volumes about the teachers and curriculum, right?

The only reason native born UMC white kid's are struggling with English must be the lack of vocabulary and grammar. This isn't Appalachia...it's MoCo.

So you go directly to the teachers and not the parents? If the parents aren't doing their part at home - ensuring they do HW, for example, even though that's pretty much a joke now - what can a teacher do?

I'm not saying all teachers are 5-star educators, but once you head into Teacher Blaming Land, you only make things worse. Bad curriculum - if people are wedded to it - can also cause damage. Unfortunately, many teachers are forced to follow a bad framework, too fearful to do what's best for students.

So please think before you start blaming. Not all white kids are super bright! That's also offensive b/c if you flip your statement, poor minorities should all be failing.

Has anyone gone through the trouble to list the W schools and percentages? I am too lazy to go through and look at each one, nor do I feel like looking through this entire thread. Thanks!

At least the kids there have that option. MCPS has done away with this option for MSers in the County by dismantling the MS Magnet program and changing the focus.

MCPS has expanded it by adding the new special classes in the middle schools. Accelerated programming is now available at home schools!

What homework? A math worksheet and spelling tests twice a month aren't sufficient homework.

The curriculum doesn't include vocabulary or grammar. Your suggestion is for parents to supplement; my suggestion is to build core educational elements into the school day. I suspect schools that are excelling do that on top of the nonsense curriculum.

If OT is excelling, it's precisely because of the teachers and educational enrichment happening at school. Look at the demographics. My theory is the best teachers proactively seek out schools where they can make a difference. Draw your own conclusions about who lobbies to land an easier job in less diverse schools.

I know teachers at OT. My kids go to a far less diverse school that barely scored a 4. Native born white kids in UMC homes shouldn't struggle with English. The curriculum stinks, and the schools should be supplementing instead of having kids do busy work when the teacher is cycling through math and reading groups. Have the kids grouped by ability to switch classrooms for math and reading. That shaves off time that can easily be dedicated to vocab and grammar....like private schools do.

Given the scores, poor minorities at many schools are thriving. That's because of the teachers.

You think it's the parents who deserve that credit?

Wait, so QO got the same grade as Rockville? 66%? Guess those house prices are not worth it afterall.

How is it even possible to change the focus of a program that has been dismantled?

The fact that any mcps school gets a 66% is appalling.

RCES got a 71. Seems the cutoff for a 5 is 75, so not that far behind.

Again, almost certainly due to the fact that RCES has about 20% FARMS and is below 50% white.

Really nothing revelatory.
