It's just cause they don't have the asians to make up for the scores. Barely any asians. That is why wootton scored even higher than churchill and why northwest and clarksburg did much better than they really are as schools. Awful schools, okay scores.

This. Where Asian-American students are, scores are always going to be high.

And what is your reason for the claim that Northwest and Clarksburg are awful schools? Not enough white kids there?
Also, regarding QO & Rockville, you do realize that QO has a larger population of Asian kids than Rockville, right?

Wootton only did better than Churchill, similar to Rockville doing better than RM, because kids at these schools don't take these tests seriously. Just like at Whitman, QO, BCC, and RM. The administration at these schools don't emphasize these tests as something important and meaningful, but as just something that needs to be completed. High achieving schools don't really care about them, unlike schools like Wootton which are all about rank and Rockville, Northwest, and Clarksburg which are all not great schools that are striving for recognition.

No, Wootton just attracts extremely smart and academically motivated people. IQ and grades are far more important there than wealth or sports. The Wootton area sends a good amount of kids to the magnets (unlike Churchill and Whitman) so the most motivated have already been pulled out which shows just how strong the school is academically.

Richest usually doesn't equal smartest so its not a surprise that Whitman and Churchill performed so far below Wootton. I agree with the PP that Whitman and Churchill kids are less motivated academically than Wootton families because they are so wealthy it doesn't matter to them but I also doubt they have the same high IQs as Wootton kids. Even with more motivation, they might not score as high.

With the top ranking and a 93 percentile the trend of attracting the smartest people to Wootton will continue. Churchill and Whitman still will be prestigious because they are areas with very flashy wealth. If you want people to think you are wealthy, this is where you live.

In the same report card,

Wootton Academic Achievement - 23

Churchill academic achievement - 24

So much for academically motivated people, IQ and grades. Some people write whatever comes in their mind.

Baltimore POLY received a 23 as well and the demographics break down like this:

African American: 1,036
White: 259
Mixed Race: 15
Hispanic: 127
Asian: 101

Source: http://reportcard.msde.maryland.gov/Graphs/#/Demographics/Enrollment/3//6/30/0403

Anyone who knows Baltimore knows that most of these African American kids are far from wealthy, and in fact live in rowhouses that are far less expensive than you can get a small 1br apartment in either the Wooten or Churchill zone. Moral of the story is that demographics don't correlate with academic achievement all the time and it really shows how much better teachers, and the learning environment here, are than in most of these highly touted MoCo schools that everyone constantly touts around here. People are spending millions of dollars to live in neighborhoods in MoCo for the public schools and they are severely lacking.

The school has good academic scores because it's a magnet. There's almost certainly nothing special about the school other than smart kids. FWIW, I don't believe there's much difference in school quality between most suburban schools in the area. The differences are in student quality.

Poly has high scores because it is a magnet. There are admissions standards in order to get in so it is like a private school. They are the best and the brightest so why is it surprising that they have high scores as compared to a non-magnet school who has to educate everyone.

Churchill always ranks better than Wootton so people choose it over Wootton if they can afford, if not people settle for Wootton. Also, IQ and grades lead to severe depression and competitiveness, which makes a hostile environment in the school. Most wouldn't send their kids there, only the people who ONLY care about grades and IQ. Sad.

Churchill has a different issue. A few people I know who, despite being able to afford Churchill, chose not to because they didn't want their kid raised in an environment where lots of kids come from wealth and summer vacations in Europe are the norm. So no, don't think that people who are choosing a different school are doing so just because they can't afford Churchill.

I think you should be less angry. Find a job in one of the tutoring companies or start one. This is a ripe market for supplementing income for high ability kids, especially Asian-Americans.

Regardless of how good or bad a school system is, Asian-American students have always studied at an accelerated pace and with more rigor. Majority also keep an eye on the curriculum being followed by students in their country of origin, so they have a great understanding of what is required to be globally competitive. If private schools and catholic schools were better than public in academics, Asian-Americans would enroll their students in those schools.

It would be great if people stopped peddling model-minority stereotypes on this forum (or anywhere else).

Also, the country of origin for Asian-Americans who were born in the US is: the US. Right?

+1 million. It's not a myth; it's a stereotype that is both inaccurate (see NYC stats about poorest minority groups) and harmful.

+1 billion.
So sick of this drivel constantly peddled on DCUM. It's harmful to Asian American kids and to non-Asian American kids. And it's just stupid, too.
- Mom of two wonderfuly average Asian American kids.
