Public School Event Held at Private Swim Club - Is this allowed?

A question was asked as to whether the event was open to non pool members.

The individual who responded by saying that non members must pay the guest fee and be accompanied by a member also manages Barnsley’s PTA Facebook page. This is all public. Check it out for yourselves.

Again, this is a very poorly thought out PTA event that does nothing to build community. Shame on you Barnsley PTA for working as an insiders club. This needs to not only be brought to the attention of the administration but also to MCCPTA. Barnsley PTA should change course and host this event at the school playground so all can attend.

So why not send a note to the PTA President with a cc to the Principal and ask the President point blank if this event is being sponsored or funded by the PTA.

Nothing like the poor parents tattling on the PTA. I am sure that will turn out well for you and your kids.

yah but management doesn't often invite the ground crews to the stock holder meetings. Do the grounds crew feel left out? Who really cares?

There is consequences to being poor, instead of crying about it one would be smart to use it as motivation to find a way to afford the swim club. If it is a bridge too far because of a multitude of reasons then that persons life would still suck even if they were invited to one party and going to that party would just act as a reminder how low they really are.

Consider working on your understanding of the "public" part of "public schools".

Only if you focus on the private part of “private party”

Dear PTA President,
I came across a flyer that there is a back to school pool party for Barnsley students at the Manor Woods Swim Club on _______; and that Barnsley teachers and staff have been invited. Is this a PTA or a school sponsored event; and if so, are Barnsley students and families who are non-members of the pool also invited?

What's wrong with that note?

I'm a PTA President and if I received such a letter, I wouldn't find it at all offensive nor would I consider it tattling.

So they should be cowed into silence for fear of retaliation? That sounds like the appropriate tenor for a public school.

How is it tattling for a parent to ask the PTA whether an event is being sponsored or funded by the PTA?

It is tattling to attempt to get the principal to apply pressure to the pta president. You’re rationalizing if you look at it any other way. MYOB

Given that this has gone on for 11 pages, I am sure the admin is aware by now.

PTA pres at a different school here. The. purpose of copying the Principal is to inform him that this event is raising some questions around the community and that if it is a PTA or a school event, then it is completely inappropriate. The principal and the PTA president are responsible for ensuring that events sponsored by the PTA or the school are inclusive.

Does the principal actually have any authority over the PTA, at least formally? I am sure she could deny access and otherwise make life difficult for the PTA of a battle erupted, but I always thought, maybe erroneously, that the PTA was formally distinct from the school.

At the end of the day, the Principal has to agree to any school or PTA sponsored family event that takes place on school property or that requests attendance of teachers or staff. While the PTA is a separate entity, there is a strong partnership between them and the Principal.
