Over the last 10 years, there has been a 1,700% increase in asylum claims.
We are experiencing an asylum backlog of 600,000 cases.
Since 2014, the US has admitted more than half a million illegal minors and family units, most of whom are still at large in the US.

You’ve offered no proof of your facts. Where’s your cite? Pulling numbers from some shady bunch of racists like CIS, and aware of how deservedly reviled they are? What in God’s name is the justification for implementing this SPECIFIC TRUMP POLICY? Would all of you be satisfied that when parents are caught attempting to cross illegally with children, that they be detained as a family unit? You're not arguing that we should release more illegals onto the streets and then expect them to appear in court, do you? And what about all these children whose parents sent them unaccompanied, or with adults not their parents? What do we do with those children? Finally, this asylum business is now the "new excuse" the illegals are using. Fleeing violence or poverty is not what is meant by asylum.

Another little factoid from today’s briefing. Of the 12,000 kids apprehended who have crossed the border illegally, 10,000 of them came unaccompanied. That means that their parents sent them on this dangerous journey on their own. Their parents don’t seem to have concern for their safety. I would argue that they are getting better treatment, care, and supervision here, in detention, than they received with their parents.

You don't seem well informed. Parents send their kids alone out of complete desperation and because the "coyotes" who help these kids navigate the journey cost upwards of $5,000 - a lifetime savings for some of these families. They have to chose - Sophie's Choice style - which child leaves and has a glimmer of hope of a better life.

You people are so stupid and craven ... It's just sad. I wish we could send you south in exchange for some of these families seeking asylum.

OTOH if the family manages to get this amount of money together, one has to wonder why not use it to move to the major city in their home country where it is very likely that they keep their entire family together and where there are better employment opportunities and better living arrangements.

Personally, I think we should do nothing for kids at border. That is, if they are apprehended be before the border crossing we don't bring them into the US but just call the Mexican authorities and let them sort it out. At the border crossing, they are not allowed in or detained, and again, the Mexican authorities are called to sort it out.

For families, since domestic violence and gang violence will no longer fly as an acceptable claim for asylum, families need to be advised at the border of their options so they can make an informed choice. Continue on and be detained until an asylum hearing or turn around.

One can't seek asylum after been caught crossing illegally - intentions to seeking asylum are not clear to authorities at this point. Papers have to be submitted at the official entry points at the time of entry.

Wrong, if you arrive at a POE and are denied entry you are allowed/required to turn around and leave. If you arrive by air, the airline is required to put you on the next flight back. You absolutely are allowed to leave.

Now, if you don't go to the POE and sneak in, either alone or with a human trafficker and are caught, you are arrested. Children are not sent to confinement with the traffickers, but are transferred to HHS who places them in a safe place.
