I have a family to support--no way I'm going to throw my life away by jumping into the middle of a mob of kids. |
It wasn't a KIPP kid who stabbed him. Keep that incident out of your mouth if you don't know what you are talking about. |
I'm the pp, and I know for a fact that she was calling because she was worried NOT because she had to - I had spoken to her earlier (the incident that split my kids head open happened at school - it wasn't anyones fault just a kid accident on the playground and literally could have happened anywhere)) and told her we were at the ER to get stitches and she asked that I call her when we got home so she would know he was OK. I'm sure some people have had a negative experience at KIPP, but my family has had a wonderful experience and truly we've had the best teachers. The chanting is more like singing (ya'll are NUTS if you think singing in elementary is bad...?) and they find fun ways to teach kids reading and math...always a good thing in my book. |
I know what I'm talking about and have witnessed awful behavior from those kids on many occasions. And they are all wearing uniforms, so it's easy to know who's who. |
Glad you had or are having a good experience, but we are talking in general here, in most KIPP schools. Not only are there plenty of videos on line you can read plenty of docs, books, reports etc on KIPPS own philosophy online and there is even a video/documentary about their failed experiment of taking over a failing public school when they couldn't select the applicants. KIPP is very good at what they do for the selected ones that apply, clearly it is a good match. It is a practice that could work overall for most public schools clearly not, and most "a lot" of folks would not support this model overall. |

The model for KIPP is similar to the military. It’s discipline, structure, rigidity, conformation. It’s long school days and focus primarily is academics at the expense/exclusion of sports, extracurriculars, etc... It’s a model that works well for poor or at risk kids where there is no support, mentors, and most likely instability and chaos at home and in their life in general.
Sure some middle class and UMC kids could use the above model but overwhelmingly, this home environment correlates the most with at risk and poor kids. And KIPPS approach works for these kids who they choose because if the kids don’t follow suit to their requirements, they drop out. Everyone knows what the above is about as the information is accessible online, on the website, videos, etc... A few individuals posting here that their experiences is different than above is not going to convince anyone any different. Most middle class families are not interested in the model above because the kids get what they need at home. |
This is hilarious. There is HUGE variation between KIPP schools - each region is different, and there are significant different between schools within regions. You clearly haven't been in any of the KIPP early childhood or elementary schools in DC. There's nothing rigid about them and the longer school day is precisely why we are able to offer academics, arts, and foreign language to our little ones. Your criticism might have been true about KIPP DC schools 15 years ago - but it's not true today. |
Well, almost all DCPS and charter schools offer academics, arts, and foreign language without extending the school day so your point is??? You are crazy if you think most middle class parents want their little ones to be in an extended school day or chanting as a group (sure it’s like singing some one said - BS). Why don’t you get back to us when your child is in 5th or 6th grade. |
The chanting - it’s just like the military when the guys run and exercise. KIPP just starts them off early as toddlers. LOL |
A 6.5 hour school day is a by-product of our country's agricultural system. I've never understood why school hours and work hours don't align. If my kid is happy, engaged, and learning, I'd rather have them in school than shuttling them back and forth between school and other activities. I hear it's not your cup of tea but it is definitely ours. And your reasons for not liking KIPP (long days, lines, and chanting) are specious. Done commenting because I guess we are all happy in our schools. It's a waste of time to try to change your mind - and it's crystal clear to me you know precious little about what goes on in my school. |
If you want to go back in the past and agricultural times, be my guest. I’ll go with modern day studies that show that young children grow and learn best by unstructured play and not being in a classroom forced to learning academics all day long. |
YOUNG children at KIPP are in play based classrooms. Have been for at least 7 years. It's more structured than some I'm sure, but the activities are creative and fun and the kids play plenty. Montessori stays unstructured as the kids get older, but there aren't many educational models that have kids higher than kindergarten in play based classrooms (even Montessori isn't play based at that age! just less structured which doesn't work for everyone). KIPP has play based PK. That's all we're saying. The high school is not play based...but neither is literally any other high school in DC. Neither are other elementary of middle schools in DC. That's not unusual. They really don't chant - I've spent many days in my son's KIPP classrooms and never heard chanting. They do some "repeat after me" stuff, but so did MY class when I was in school 30+ years ago! They sing their multiplication tables, but again that's not creepy or weird, its a memorization technique that works. They also use flashcards...are those also evil in the 3rd/4th grade when kids learn their multiplication facts? If the last time you were in a KIPP classroom was more than 5 years ago, you have no idea what they're doing now. If you're basing your racist sounding arguments on youtube videos, you have no idea what you're talking about. Stop. |
Don’t know about KIPP, but my neighbor put her child in PreK 3 at our IB school which i>95% poor/at risk. She said they spent more time than she liked sitting doing worksheets. She especially did not like that 3 year olds had worksheet homework that they needed to turn in. She pulled her child out of the school after that year. |
| I have heard Kipp is not good at serving students with IEPs at Rick of not. Is this true? |
Few schools are good at this. As a SN parent, I can’t imagine they could be any worse than any other school. |
