For as beautiful as Jackie O was, that portrait is pretty awful. She looks like a ghost.

I would add Ellen Arthur based on the portraits.

I've never understood why Jackie is regarded as great beauty. She was undoubtedly graceful and elegant. Certainly her style and poise made her very attractive. But beautiful? Only in the sense that the way she carried herself made her beautiful. I guess this is the same quality that allows some to see Michelle Obama as beautiful. I think both women are handsome with qualities that make them very appealing. But they are both far from being true beauties. Instead the french term "jolie laide" (translated as "beautiful ugly") comes to mind in both cases.

What exactly is a true beauty pp?

of course beauty can be defined in many ways, but i was referring to features that have been traditionally thought to represent facial beauty in women - symmetrical features, large eyes, high cheekbones, etc.

In other words, white European traditional features.

Actually, those are pretty common beauty standards in non-western cultures. Even in Africa. That describes Ethiopian beauty to me. And in Asia - symmetrical, large eyes, high cheekbones - commonly found in beautiful women in Japan and China. It's definitely global.

2) Laura Bush (back in a day), definitely a pretty face, not sure about her figure in her modest outfits
3) Not sure, I see a lot of votes for Jackie, but I don't find her very attractive. Elegant - yes.

Sorry ladies who voted for Michelle. She is build like a brick house and with her bulldog overbite she does not stand a chance in the beauty competition. Never saw her been dressed well, majority of her dresses were intended to hide her enormously heavy hips.
She is definitely a pleasant person, has charming smile and good hair, she brought up the important issue of healthy diet for kids, and is educated - but that's a different topic.

I think Michelle is gorgeous and nothing you say will change my mind. Sorry.

DP. Agree. Most of the MO hate going on here is plain and simple racist BS (talking to you PP who said Michelle was not even pretty from a black perspective as if black people have a lower standard of beauty and the PP who said Michelle always wore fake hair- wrong). Michelle is a beautiful and classy woman and I would kill to have her body over any first woman. Hips are beautiful thing not to hide, they show femininity and fertility. I’ll bet anything she has a lower body fat % than Melania (who I think is pretty, but not hot).

Wow, she has WHITE, and in REALLY WHITE, teeth!!

No wonder she looked fantastic.

So you’re saying she looks good because she has white teeth? Funny, I think the top one is most beautiful.

Do you have beer goggles on? Do you not see the overbite, heavy makeup, eyelash extensions and unnatural hair? Only after trump won did she release her natural curls.

What about her hair in those pics show unnatural hair? Was it because she straightened it? Do you not remember the outrage she got when she wore in curly? Almost as bad as Barack’s Tan suit! So Melania is allowed to dye her hair and not be considered unnatural but Michelle isn’t allowed to press her hair? I would post picture of Melania without fake lashes and makeup but one does not exist. This is the only one hat I can find without makeup and you can’t even see her. And for those who are saying she only has fillers, that is a joke.

Oh please, exactly what is white or European about symmetry? There have been studies demonstrating that symmetry and certain facial proportions are regarded as “beautiful” across cultures and ethnicities. American bias towards white-Europeans beauty standards is real, but PP’s description of beauty doesn’t reflect that.

+1.

But don't tell that to DC uglies -- they prefer to live in their little hate bubble.

Actually standards of beauty do change over time and culture. Just look at centuries old portraits of women considered beautiful in their own time. Many times that beauty doesn't translate to today's standards. Heck, just look at some of the movie stars of the 20s and 30s compared to today's movie stars. Very different. And those considered most beautiful today wouldn't necesssarily have been considered beautiful 100 or 200 years ago. Especially since pale white skin was highly valued over tanned faces.

Also, thinking about large eyes as a test of beauty -- that would seem to rule out Melania, because she's got kind of strange eyes that don't open very widely.

Very naturally beautiful. No botox, fillers, plastic enhancements involved.

Wow she is beautiful. Also Jackie - iconic. Michelle also iconic. Laura bush was very attractive. Melania is hot.

She was never a First Lady, she died before husband became president

Nice painting of her young, here’s reality...

/bubble burst/

Why do you assume that the one photograph is more "reality" than the other? The painting is based on this photograph:

And there is this photograph:

And this one:

She was by all accounts a strikingly beautiful woman.

It is true, however, that she was never first lady because she died at age 42 before her husband became president.

He was vice president , in succession to be president after Garfield died. She caught pneumonia in the interim. He was apparently heart broken. I think a niece performed official duties and cared for their children, but he added her portrait to First Ladies to honor her. I don’t know if he remarried.

like the portraits of the queens, It is so hard to see if they are beautiful with the headpieces and ridiculously elaborate/huge gowns.

That dress with the bustle is freaking hideous.
