Sadly, this.

Cheer up! Ralph by five!

I'll believe it when I see it. Hillary was also winning till she wasn't.

So you are saying Northam will win the popular vote, but lose the electoral vote? Can you explain exactly how that would work?

There's no electoral college vote for the Virginia governor! Jeez.....

Uh yeah, that was my point.

What are you talking about? It doesn't matter that polls had Hillary winning the popular vote. That means NOTHING.

it matters in explaining that the polls in 2016 weren't actually that far off. Now Northam may well lose (and all Dems out there, go out and VOTE, don't be complacent) But the idea that polls are meaningless because somehow they were totally wrong in 2016 is just garbage.

We have one. But he is being trashed for being moderate and normal.

Arlington doesn't matter much, north or south.

I agree that Arlington itself isn't going to be a deciding factor in this race, but I still found it interesting. It's not uncommon to not see Republican volunteers at polling places on off years when we're just electing local officials (because the Republicans typically don't even put up candidates for those), but I don't remember the last time we had a governor's race and there wasn't a single person there from the Arlington GOP handing out sample ballots. Given how tight this race is, if anything I would have thought that both parties would have people everywhere they could to try to capture those last few voters who are wavering. Maybe my polling place is just a fluke, but I do wonder if the lack of any republican representation there indicates that republicans are feeling a bit more lukewarm about their candidates, and thus not so enthused about coming out in crappy weather to help them win.

It's also interesting to me that even though I'm hearing reports that turn-out numbers around here have been high so far, none of my local Republican friends who have always posted "I voted" Facebook status updates in the past have been silent so far. Maybe they just haven't gotten there yet, but my Democrat friends have been turning out in droves. Obviously me looking at my Facebook feed is about as far from scientific as it gets, but it does feel like there's an enthusiasm gap here in northern Virginia. If the turn out really is high but the Republicans are staying home, it's cause for hope.

+1. I don't get how you can look at this race and say there's no moderate option, Northam has gotten thrashed by progressive groups for being too moderate.

I know Arlington doesn’t “matter” but there were tons of people voting with me at 7:00 am this morning. Biggest turnout I’ve seen for a state election in a long time. And yes, no Rs hanging out ballots to be seen...

So you approve of the liberals' race-bating hating commercial?

What are you talking about? Gillespie is the one who has run multiple hate-filled ads. Northam has done none. A Latino group independently briefly ran a race-based as before it was pulled.

It’s fhis type of alternative universe that trump voters live in that blows my mind.

Um... Arlington absolutely matters. In fact, Arlington/Fairfax/DC suburbs generally make or break the election for Democrats in VA. Big turnout in that area = good for Dems

DP... seems like more people think Gillespie's using hate tactics than Northam

"Meanwhile, voters are more likely to blame Gillespie for how ugly the race has gotten: 50 percent say he has attacked Northam unfairly, while 39 percent say the Democrat made unfair attacks."

When even Fox News will blame the Republican, you know they have to be wrong.

Sadly, I don't think it matters -- what matters is that people incorrectly perceive there to be gangs/criminal immigrants/etc and no battery of facts is going to change their minds.

Other Arlington poster here, Arlington does matter in that sense, but it's not like it's a swing jurisdiction where the state will go the way Arlington goes. We can look to Arlington for signals about how the Dems are doing generally, but since there are so few Republicans here, it's harder to get a sense of how they're doing generally based on sampling from Arlington (although when their volunteers don't even show up at the polls, that is telling).

hard to imagine a sample ballot or lack thereof could still 'waver' anyone in this race.

from all we know it might be a new Republican technique to forgo such posts at polling stations. to be honest with you this feels so antiquated in this day and age. but i don't work in politics so what do i know.

These days it’s the GOP raising everyone’s taxes.
