Get rid of the bigots too while we are at it. |
"Several schools bear Barbara Jordan's name, including an elementary school in Odessa, Texas, and Austin, Texas, Barbara Jordan Early College Prep School,an elementary school in Richmond, Texas, Barbara Jordan Elementary School, a middle school in Cibolo, Texas, and Barbara Jordan High School in Houston." Grow up. |
They don't need to do a run off or to change the rules. The rules clearly say the voting is to provide potential names to the board and is not binding. The board has the final say. They can therefore consider the type of names that garnered the most votes and pick a name based on that. |
Didn't the Board suggest generic "Stuart". And,now you want them to negate that vote? |
Motion from the July 17, 2017 meeting:
And, now you expect them to change their minds once again? This motion passed. Stuart received the most votes. Why would they choose something else now? |
So the Board says they have voted to change the name, then disingenuously suggest Stuart is a name change, then they set up a voting process where they set forth 72 names and no run-off mechanism, and then they says the winner is Stuart with a third of the votes, a majority of the community has spoken. Sounds about right. I really don't care whether they change the name, but this who process shows the incompetence of our school board. |
You left out the part where the community initially voted to keep the name, but the Board kept changing the rules. The lack of vision for "unintended consequences" with this Board is incredible. My dad always said that most teachers lacked common sense. (And, yet, he encouraged me to become one!) Our School Board lacks common sense in spades. |
I agree. |
Then it's decided. |
Glad you agree! |

Sounds like Ryan forgot that he voted in support of "Stuart"........ |
No. He voted in favor of getting rid of "J.E.B. Stuart" and allowing the community to decide whether "Stuart High School" without the initials was an acceptable "compromise" name. It clearly isn't. Over 80% of the votes were against "Stuart High School." It would be ridiculous to make that the new name, and Ryan has correctly pointed that out. |
You don't believe in rules do you? Do you always want to change them every time you don't get the result you desire? First, we were told we would go by a community vote. The community voted by about 2/3 to keep Jeb Stuart. Then, we were told we would form a committee. Half of the Ad Hoc committee--the half from outside the community voted to change. The other half--made up of community members--voted to keep Jeb Stuart. Meanwhile, the slots to speak at SB meetings were manipulated in the early meetings to favor those who wanted change. FOIA'd emails indicated that Evans had desired this change for sometime and worked with "changers"--many from outside the community. FOIA also indicates that the "massive resistance" reason for the Jeb Stuart name was bogus. Evans or Hynes made clear that the "massive resistance" reason was important to getting change. And, even though it is indicated in the FOIA through minutes from old SB meetings that this was not the case, they kept citing that. Again, the community voted early on that they wished to keep the name Jeb Stuart. Evans and Hynes did not like that result, so they changed the rules. Over and over again. |
With a ridiculous number of names to choose from, Stuart won the most points. Change proponents are now arguing that a vote for Peace Valley (or Triggered Snowflake, or Braden Aust) is a vote for Barbara Rose Johns, but that is not necessarily the case. |
I think a vote for Triggered Snowflake is a vote for JEB Stuart. Are some of those names the names of high school students? Never heard of them. |
