Ok to ask friends to pay for cleaning when they use our beach house?

OP, perhaps this 10 page thread has convinced you that folk have NO idea what it takes to maintain a beach house.

But do you hire a cleaner every time someone stays there?

Different poster here. We have to hire a cleaner every time someone stays there, because the house miraculously does not clean itself; and no one will clean to the specs of the next renter - unless it is a proper cleaning company.

People have no effing common sense or consideration, really.

We don't rent it out. I clean it when I go or hire a cleaner.

Then it's either dirty, you don't have people stay there for a week without you often or at all, or you don't work and enjoy cleaning after other people. No way you have twice monthly friends/family that stay for a week at a time without you there and drive up there on the weekend after working a full time job and clean.
I really have low tolerance for people that give these vague partial answers and pretend the situation is analogous. You started off by claiming it was a cabin, like people would know your whole backstory about the tear down cabin and you family's historical nickname for the place.

Um,what are you talking about? I never said I had people staying there 2x/a month. I said when people stay at our property, I don't ask them to pay for cleaning. I also don't have friends that are slobs. So while I vacuum and dust and do the sheets when I arrive, the house is fairly clean and similar to how I left it. I assume my friends do the sheets, too, unless they specifically say they did them, I strip them anyway. I don't really enjoy cleaning and I work as an attorney. You've made a lot of incorrect assumptions...I was simply answering the post with our experience as to what we do. You're trying to make it sound as if my situation is completely different and I don't really see that it is.

The thread is about an OP who has friends/family staying at a million dollar beach house WITHOUT her there, for extended stays, all summer long, with families, and is asking is it is ok to have them pay the cleaning bill due to them getting a free vacation.

Your situation is not even remotely close to being the same. No one is asking about occasional house guests and changing the sheets like you would if someone comes from out of town and spends the weekend with you.
This is essentially a free beach house rental situation.

I haven't read most of the posts. She didn't say in the OP that the guests stay for extended stays all summer long. If true, that is the only difference in our situations and, if true, doesn't change the answer. Our home is worth more than a million, it is right in the beach, we have numerous friends who use it (not occasionally, but much of the time), we don't rent it out, etc. I see the situations very similar. Our guests will often bring things like paper towels (bulk) and leave them for us. That's the most we've received. No one has offered to pay for a maid and I haven't asked them to. All this said, I think asking for cleaning fees is fine and not asking for cleaning fees is fine. We choose not to.
