Seriously, has anyone outside of Virginia ever heard of JMU?

My son is currently a student at JMU and his housemates are from CT, MD, Ohio, and VA. Lots of out-of-state kids there.

I went there in the 1980s. Have to say this thread is amusing-almost like someone has an axe to grind against James Madison.

Seems odd. Never had any problem with name recognition with my alma mater in Philadelphia main line suburbs for what it's worth. JMU is viewed as a pretty good school by most folks here....although a lot of folks mistake it as a private school.

+1...FYI for Business it ranks as one of the top 25 business undergrads in the nation www.businessweek.com

By the way "unknown" James Madison and "unknown" rival U of Richmond will be ESPNs Game Day this Saturday....

In the mid Atlantic most people have heard of UVA/WM

VT is probably the best know because of sports. JMU is a little less well known but fairly so.

Every other public school in Va - Longwood, Radford, GMU, ODU, CNU....pretty unknown.

Have any of you DMV folks every heard of Rider U, Fairleigh Dickinson or Montclair State U?

Not comparable. JMU regularly ranks highly nationally in periodicals covering Public College rankings.

Such as? They're all listed under Regional Universities for the USNews rankings.

You mean the one that has them listed as the #1 or #2 regional school in the South for 18 years running?

Look, I am no JMU proponent - at best it measures up to large, second tier Nationals. But it ranks significantly higher than the other schools you mention, including Mason.

How about looking at apples to apples - for example how does JMU or the other schools measure up against typical National State Us such as Rutgers, Maryland or Penn State rather than CNU, GMU or Montclair?

Pretty close as it turns out:

https://best-colleges.time.com/money/more-rankings/the-50-best-public-colleges#/list

http://www.bizjournals.com/bizjournals/news/2015/02/12/2015-rankings-of-u-s-public-colleges.html

I wouldn't take the bait. You're right but obviously the plate has an axe....leave it alone. I know now that Miami U is a great school but I never knew it existed before I applied there---and I'm from OH. Similar type institution....most people outside the Midwest confuse it with the 'Canes

Yes but I am barely out of state . I am from Bethesda so of course I know JMU.. Tons of classmates went there. Not familiar with Christopher Newport.

My daughter got a tennis scholarship to JMU - it was actually the reason we moved to VA from Tucson NM. I had vaguely heard of the school once or twice, but in NM it is all about the Lobos.

My daughter had a great time at JMU, and ended up going to a top 14 law school. She wasn't the only one, so it can't be too bad a school.

Lots of people go graduate from JMU and go on to law school - my neighbor went to Georgetown Law. JMU is a good university.

Nor would I. Neither provide a high quality education.

You people are unbelievable. And I'm so glad you won't be sending your kids to these schools. Though it'll be fun to see where you actually do wind up sending them. Karma, you know.

Seriously. These posters must have young kids. My oldest is in 9th grade and suddenly parents are singing a different tune. Nothing like finding out that your "gifted" 3rd grade kid couldn't hack 8th grade Algebra 1 Intensified to make you reassess state schools. I'm finding the backtracking hilarious...

I am not sure what is not to be believed. I have spent the better part of two decades in academia, teaching at universities up and down the East Coast, and approving MSCHE accreditations. The majority of students at schools like JMU and CNU do not get involved in research, grant proposals or contribution to journals. It is as if their purpose of attending is simply to get a piece of paper to get a job.

Gee, imagine that!

Says the person whose child couldn't get into JMU!
JMU students aren't going to describe their college experience as "blah," you nitwit.

There are always a certain group of people who have axes to grind with the good VA schools. Either they couldn't get in, their kids couldn't get in, or they regard any non-Ivy school as beneath them. You're right, it is amusing.

Hey, I have a friend who went to JMU and GULC! Do we know the same woman or could there be...(gasp) more than one successful JMU grad?

I do not live in VA but DC so it's not a public option here. Moreover my kids are young and I love in a neighborhood with mostly young kids and retirees. I know very few people with high school or college age kids. So it is not on my radar screen. I don't think that makes me oblivious. Outside of kid stuff, my work is mostly in international affairs so I have never run across a JMU grad. I think I must be different if you live in VA since your tax dollars are supporting this university and it is a cheap in- state option for kids.

Funny. I am JMU grad (granted also have PhD in Economics from UChicago, and I have never seen you in my role at World Bank...

I am not the only one either...

One of DH's close law school friends (Yale Law) was a JMU philosophy major undergrad-he went to do refugee work for the UN after law school. Super nice guy. I don't know anything about CNU but VA state schools all seem to be decent at minimum.

My colleague, a fellow Senior Advisor at the State Department, is a TJ, JMU and Harvard Law grad. Don't be so presumptuous, pp.

Oh, control yourself. It was a post for the PP, a fellow alum. Not everyone is interested in impressing a bunch of anonymous posters--some people are simply sharing information.

This thread is flamebait....I remember a "Which is better? JMU or VT thread which went on for, I kid you not, 25 pages. Between threads covering VT, JMU, N Arlington vs McLean, the only thing worth popcorn anymore is the "Which state is better? MD or VA" threads.

I suppose the Pimmit Hills threads are still a guilty pleasure....
