When comparing high participation states, Virginia has the third highest SAT scores. Yet they only had three schools on the list.

Maryland had several more schools on the list, yet their SATs are ninth highest, below VA.

One of the VA schools on that newsweek list is Abermarle HS. Abermarle's SATs are high, 1668. However 1668 is the Fairfax County Public Schools average SAT score. 11 NOVA high schools scored higher than Abermarle (signifiacntly in many cases), 8 fcps and 3 arlington county schools.

The list is just not accurate.

Apparently newsweek did not include several top school districts in their survey to build their list.

Also noted, Boston Latin and New York's Stuyvesant did not make the list.

The high school mentioned in the Chicago Tribune article was accidently omitted from the Newsweek list in 2008, along with other top schools. Apparently they revised the list after tur initial publication to include the schools they screwed up on ranking. I wonder if they will do that again this year.

Exactly..

Check this rankings for 2013 list of 2000 high schools

http://www.newsweek.com/2013/05/06/america-s-best-high-schools.html

They have just 3 FCPS schools out of 2000 and ONLY 66 VA high schools. .. They dont have langley / Mclean, that have comparable SAT scores as Madison which is at 146 rank.

There is also one high school from VA with below 1000 SAT average score in the list too and 20 below 1500 SAT score. Even Herndon High School, Fairfax High School and South Lakes high school have averages more than 1600 SAT score..

All I can say is the list is incomplete

SAT is only a part of the criteria. Besides, test score doesn't mean much.

There are also several high schools on the list that had 70-80% of the kids college bound. That percentage would represent a failing high school in this area.

80% college bound is not bad depending on the location.

Yes but 80% college bound and a mediocre SAT does not make younone of the top 500 high schools in the country by any reasonable measure.

Maybe in VA, but definitely not the country. You need to get out more.

Not PP, but how does pointing out that 80 percent college bound and a mediocre SAT doesn't make you a top school amount to being a sore loser? I think that is a valid point. I really don't care whether VA schools or MD schools are better, I'm only concerned with whether my kids are getting a good education, so I don't get the high school back on forth on this thread. I'm half expecting someone to respond to your sore loser post with "I know you are but what am I."
