MCPS Removes Religious Holiday Designations from School Calendar

Anonymous
MCPS has far mor issues to deal with than this nonsensical one-overcrowded schools, 2.0 mess, severe racial/socio- economic disparity among schools to the point where it seems like pre de-segregation days, among others. They should have told this goup who wanted the change-NO! The #'s did not warant a closing or a change and leave it at that. It is all so ridiculous!

Nah - they don't care about other religions. I'm sure they are happy now that they got the Jewish and Christian holidays wiped off the calendar.

I am an AMERICAN Muslim and MCPS teacher. As an American who believes in democracy and free speech, I believe that the Muslim community had every right to advocate for the day off even though I never supported the idea. The community NEVER asked for the other holidays to be removed from the calendar. That was a decision made by the Board of Education NOT supported by the Muslim community.

MCPS Muslim parent here. I agree with the teacher. No one wanted the religious names removed from the calebdar . That was never the issue.

Also, I'd love to see some numbers of predicted absences county wide for each religion. I would accept whatever threshold MCPS imposes on being disruptive.

And the hate on this thread makes me nauseated. In an AMERICAN, a mom, a doctor in this community, and I'm a Muslim.

NP here. Please rest assured the actual number of anti-Muslim posters on this thread is undoubtedly very small and is in no way representative of the DCUM majority. We are all one human family.

Yeah-let's hear you say that when they build a low income housing project in your Whitman neighborhood or bus a "boatload" of newly arrived, illegal hispanic kids to Churchill, or better yet build a Gaza area resettlement/refugee center in Chevy Chase.......we are all one "human" family allright!

blah.....blah.....blah WHO GIVES A SHIT. MoCo school system is so fucked up, this doesn't even register on their growing list of screw ups.

But Why did the MCPS board make those changes? not because a bunch of "progressive "PC" moms wanted to be "all inclusive"??? not because MCPOS though it would be a good idea. It was to shut up a bunch of vocal arrogant people (muslim Students in this case) and to put a lid on the "pot of shit" they were stirring (and likely to avoid a lawsuit).

Yes, it's so un-American to ask your elected government to do something. No, wait...

How dare we encourage our students to work within the system to advocate for change and have their voices be heard! How dare they! This is the sign of a failing school system, clearly!

I live in Takoma Park because, yes, I'm pretty much of the belief that we're all one human family.

A change was made-yet they are still not pleased with the outcome. Next they will want times set aside to pray, and the school gym floor the designated prayer area, and a loud "bullhorn" to call to prayer! We cannot make a concession in a "public" school for every person who wants one-I am sure there are private school options to accomodate their requests!

Maybe "they" -- "they" who? -- are not pleased with the change, because the change they were asking for is different from the change MCPS instituted. If you asked the county to put in a stop sign at your intersection, and the county responded by taking the word "stop" off all of the stop signs in the county, would you be pleased with the outcome?

In any case, the screams of outrage I'm hearing are not coming from the Muslims who asked for a change to the school calendar. The screams of outrage I'm hearing are coming from anti-Muslim people like you.

Well it made the front page of every national news page yesterday and some even today. So obviously there are a lot of people who give a shit. Maybe it will bring out all the other wrongs of MCPS. Would love for those to go national too. Worst school system ever.

My daughter goes to a private school and they recognize every holiday on their school calendar (including the Eids) but they don't give off for any religious holidays. No Yom Kippur, No Easter Monday. Their Spring Break is after 3rd marking period every year. If they celebrate a religious holiday, they are excused absences with guaranteed no tests/homwork only. Many of the kids represent their holidays at the prior morning meeting. It is a shame our public schools can not be so tolerant. Don't ignore, don't give off, but excuse and embrace. Maybe there would be a lot less bigotry and fighting.

Good grief. No, MCPS is not the worst school system ever.

I'm guessing they give off for Christmas.

But, in any case, the religious holidays were not on the calendar because MCPS was observing the religious holidays. The religious holidays were on the calendar as explanations for the days off. MCPS has some of those days off (Christmas Eve, Christmas, Good Friday, Easter Monday) because of state law. And MCPS has others of those days off (Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur) because they believe that so many MCPS teachers will be absent and require subs that it makes more sense to not have school on those days.

For all the taxes, real estate prices and the hype, it is the biggest let down. Is that PC enough for you?

He probably thinks all Jews are doctors, lawyers, accountants, and producers.

Every school I've taught at, red or green zone, in MCPS has had several Jewish teachers. I've met Jewish teachers from DCPS, PGCPS, and BCPSS.
