MCPS Removes Religious Holiday Designations from School Calendar

I guess just me, but this renaming does not bother me at all.

So, steady state absenteeism is 3.2-4.2% of students and teachers and muslim holiday is 5.6 and 5.0%. Who knows what the standard deviation is...

Anyhow, MoCo made the national news for this, woo hop!

well, there you go. 1% pop on Eid, possibly due to muslim absentees.

More likely it was that Ali community activist mentioned in the article that just acted relentless about his personal view.

wonder how London and England is handling it? they have significant muslim populations and previously tried appeasement and multiculturalism.

Front page of MSN and national outrage. Voting shows that 82% of the population think our county is a joke. I have to agree with them.

And by the way, I am not against Muslims. They never asked for this. They never wanted to remove any other holidays, but just add one of theirs. I really think the Board is a bunch of assholes for changing it to this. If anything, it will bring unwanted hatred to the Muslim community.

All they had to do is say their threshold is over 15% absenteeism and since the last holiday (Eid) only had 5% (and any normal day is 3-4%) that it isn't enough to warrant it. But if any faculty member that celebrates it, gets an excused extra personal day. Students are guaranteed no tests and excused from homework and classwork for the day with a parent note. The End.

Sounds unconstitutional to me.

The Board, except for Mike Durso, are a bunch of cowards.

I would rather scrap all the religious references than note Muslim holidays-but I think the Muslims need to realize that this country was founded on Judeo-Christian values, not Muslim ones. I pray this country will NEVER become Muslim centric-then it will be time to flee as it will no longer be America!

I've plenty of Jews, and plenty of Christians, but I've never met any Judeo-Christians. Have you?

Here's another group of people I've met plenty of: Americans who are Muslims.

MCPS Muslim parent here. I agree with the teacher. No one wanted the religious names removed from the calebdar . That was never the issue.

Also, I'd love to see some numbers of predicted absences county wide for each religion. I would accept whatever threshold MCPS imposes on being disruptive.

And the hate on this thread makes me nauseated. In an AMERICAN, a mom, a doctor in this community, and I'm a Muslim.

PP, I'm an MCPS parent too, with a Jewish heritage, and the hate on this thread makes me nauseated too. I have to hope that the haters are a very small minority in MCPS.

Don't kid yourself, the Muslims hate you! (if you are a non-Muslim that is).

Try protesting the lack of Jewish or Christian days off on their school calendar and see what happens....I doubt you would live to see the outcome though!

Nah - they don't care about other religions. I'm sure they are happy now that they got the Jewish and Christian holidays wiped off the calendar.

I am an AMERICAN Muslim and MCPS teacher. As an American who believes in democracy and free speech, I believe that the Muslim community had every right to advocate for the day off even though I never supported the idea. The community NEVER asked for the other holidays to be removed from the calendar. That was a decision made by the Board of Education NOT supported by the Muslim community.

NP here. Please rest assured the actual number of anti-Muslim posters on this thread is undoubtedly very small and is in no way representative of the DCUM majority. We are all one human family.

Don't speak for me. I don't hate non-Muslims. But I have zero respect for bigots.

But Why did the MCPS board make those changes? not because a bunch of "progressive "PC" moms wanted to be "all inclusive"??? not because MCPOS though it would be a good idea. It was to shut up a bunch of vocal arrogant people (muslim Students in this case) and to put a lid on the "pot of shit" they were stirring (and likely to avoid a lawsuit).
