Probably too many cowards on this list to actually get in touch with her.

I must say I was fascinated by the various issues brought up and how many times people incorrectly surmised motivation or circumstance. I actually brought my child up to never speak about anyone who was not present to defend themself.

Thanks for posting, but many of simply don't care. Glad you are Googling yourself and your daughter, though.

Lots of embarrassing comments from McLean people, so much hate

I have now read through the entire thread.

An accomplished young woman was put down for her success, a supportive and genuinely proud mother was criticized for her involvement, and a poster from LA was also criticized for defending USC.

I know that the DCUM posting community can do better and nicer, much nicer.

The comments on this thread from McLean people were from a former McLean resident now living in LA, speaking to diversity of LA and the safety of USC, and from current McLean residents addressing the diversity in McLean today.

b.s. The girl was not put down in any post. Show me where. L.A. - no. South Central L.A., the crime ridden neighborhood around U.S.C, yes. The mom, umm... indirectly.

why does she need to do it privately? Why not answer any questions here?
My only one is did the daughter really teach herself mandarin at 16? Is she fluent?
Off now to teach myself Arabic. I heard that is a hot one right now on college apps.

I'm still waiting for you to show us where anyone "put down" the subject of the story due to her success. One person did say she could do better than USC, but that is not putting her down.

I am embarrassed of the one Marshall bashing lady from McLean, in the end her actions seem classist and even racist giving us a bad name. She needs to focus on something different and not get worked up when something positive happens to Marshall.

What does this student's getting admitted to USC at 16 have to do with Marshall's 2012 US News ranking?

You need to work harder on your trolling. This is pretty amateur, even by DCUM standards.

The comments on this thread suggest otherwise.

Adriana Ayiotis, a junior, at Marshall HS did not get into TJ and now has been accepted into a special program for high achieving high school juniors at the University of Southern California. So, students who do not go to TJ can and do just as well or better than students who don't.

My DD will attend Marshall HS starting next year, and is looking forward to it.

More on Ms. Ayiotis at: http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/fairfax-student-heads-to-college-at-16/2013/05/12/77dea1ce-b8ba-11e2-92f3-f291801936b8_story.html

I'm thankful that someone understood my story. Hello everyone. My name is Andrianna Ayiotis and this story was not supposed to be a "look-at-me-I'm-so-great" story. This was an opportunity to highlight the successes of the Fairfax County public schools and show students who are rejected from TJ that if they learn from their mistakes and push themselves, they can still achieve great things. Yes, I might be able to attend a "better" university if I wait until senior year to apply for college, but I believe in fate. I applied to USC knowing how expensive it was and told the powers that be that I would attend if I was give a full ride/almost full ride. The combination of scholarships and grants worked for my family's financial situation and I am taking that as a sign from the universe that this is the path I am supposed to embark on. To all the parents who are scared for my safety, I appreciate your concern but please don't worry yourselves. I was born and raised in New York City, so I am very accustomed to the safety precautions I will need to take in Los Angeles. Lastly, to the mothers/teachers who are concerned that I won't have a social life, I have always been two years younger than everyone else in my grade and this has never impacted me socially. I once again appreciate your concern but the twenty-four students who were chosen for this program were chosen specifically because they would thrive. If I were not ready, the admissions officers would not have accepted my application and my mother would not let me go.

Hello. I would like to correct a misconception. I DID NOT teach myself Chinese, nor am I fluent. I have taken Chinese in school (thank you Fairfax County public schools) and I am above the proficiency level for an IB Chinese 1 student (the course I just completed). This year I also won student of the year award for Upper Level Chinese during the awards ceremony for the Marshall Academy because of my hard work and effort. I did not learn Chinese to pad my college application. My college application is impressive as it is now. I learned Chinese because China currently has some of the world's best doctors, engineers and computer programmers; I plan to use my Chinese in the future to create an organization to pool our countries' resources and brainpower. If you have any other questions about my achievements, please reference my LinkedIn.

If you would like to learn Arabic, I would suggest Rosetta Stone; their software is very effective (not being paid to say this).

The only subject I did teach myself (when I was 14) was calculus. Mathematics has always come naturally to me and I thought it was a good way to spend my summer. This investment has led to my success in International Baccalaureate Higher Level Math, a two-year course that is considered by schools that offer both IB and AP to be more challenging and comprehensive than AP Calc BC.
